I think Evil69er is talking about the Software Updates Package number 3. Microsoft has released several of this software update packages that add software compatibility to Win2k. The latest version on Windows Update is the third one I think. Evil69er, these are definitely different from a Service Pack. Win2k only has SP1 for it right now. If you used NT 4.0 SP3 on your Win2k install, I don't think you would be running your system too well right now.

Windows 2000 Compatibility Updates
228 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min
Windows 2000 was specifically architected to enable customers to easily add additional application support after the product had shipped for general release. The August 2000 package is the third release of such additional application support and includes software compatibility updates for Windows 2000. The August 2000 package includes the compatibility updates of the May 2000 and February 2000 packages

The readme on the web site lists specific applications that are affected by these updates. Interesting. I don't see Half Life specifically listed, though that may not mean much. The changes provided by these updates may offer functionality that helps Half Life in any case. I haven't gone to Sierra's web site for confirmation so couldn't say for sure whether these updates have anythig do with anything.

If these updates are not the case, then another reason for Evil69er's messages would be go along with what Shukaido stated above. But to further explain... The error reporting mechanism used by Half Life could be misidentifying the OS and the OS SP level because of a registry key or file check or another reason.

These two explanations make far more sense than that Win2k was running an NT SP level.

I had the compatibility upgrade also on like you mentioned above, and it still required a reinstallation of the win2k os 🙁

so, don't get sp1 if you're a hard-core TFC player on win2k pro 😛

SP1 causes no problems with HalfLife and actually ALLOWS MORE games to work (Star Trek Armada wouldn't work with pre-SP1).

My experience

See, I cannot run HL on my Win2k SP1 machine without it locking up randomly. I have not dug in and really started troubleshooting yet, but for some reason HL is not running very well on my Win2k machine. UT runs great though!

That's nice to know im not the only one with HL problems on the SP1.
I also have some D2 problems, but those might not be related to win2k, as we all know BNET SUX.
