They allow you to register, check your grades, etc, online....

Only, you can only use the damn thing between 7:00AM and 7:00PM monday-friday, excluding holidays! WTF is that? It's a computer! They say they half to take it down every night for maintenance and backups, but it spends more time down than it does up! There's no way it takes longer to make a backup than it does to create the data in the first place. Fvcking morons can't run anything right :|

I just go to a local community college and our system is up all the time. Next fall my school has limited hours just like yours, what gives?

Still better than

A) Waiting in lines to register.
or
B) Calling in to a Voice Response Unit to register.

I had to do both in college and that was truly a pain compared to registering over the internet between 7AM and 7PM

I can do both of those.... also between 7:00AM and 7:00PM :| (actually, waiting in line has shorter hours than that...)

I could see them taking it down for backups from 2:00 to 4:00 AM or something, but not for 12 hours a day.

About the same at my school. Except mine seems to randomly go down during the day as well. God, our system sucks.

they probably don't have redundant systems to take over while they back up their data.

I go to the University of Texas... I do EVERYTHING by computer. Never even seen a real advisor before except to try to get into a class that was full. Our system is open 24 hours a day to do everything but I must say... when registration periods come around.. the add/drop system gets slow as sh!t. But fast as hell all other times :D I don't think the servers like 10s of thousands of kids d/ling class lists.

Hey... no complaining, when I was a freshman at Rutgers Univ, there was no online registration. We all had to wake up 7am to call in for our registration (or else our class would get filled up) and the system only supported around 100 students at a time... NIGHTMARE!!!

Yeah, the worst of the them has to be this one UHM. When you finally get to register, you spend around 5 hours registering because the servers can't handle the load, yet they never add more bandwith :(

Clemson's is always up. Usually they just have one server for it (but it's up 24/7 including holidays), but during peak registration times (right when it becomes available for the next semester), they have another one that they turn on or make available or something. I've never had a problem getting into the system. Getting into classes, on the other hand....
