I hate the RIAA because they have ruined my internet access...

I get back to school. Anyways, i'm on ethernet on the dorms here, and well there is a bandwith cap on the napster port, the scour port, the AIM file transfer port. This is all the evil RIAAs doing, those bastards will die. My school caved into their pressure. Not only that but apparently all the ports for online games are blocked too so no counterstrike. The only port that they havent screwed over is ICQ as i can still send files fast on that to outside of UCLA. Damn them damn them damn them. Napster is slower than a modem.... WTF

These are some of the annoying things you rarely hear about a school before you apply/go there.

For instance, I was told time and time again about how wired my school is, and all these programs they have. I wasn't till I got here that I found out they use the god-forsaken token ring design.

yeah, Virginia Tech is way overhyped as well. Ever heard of the Blacksburg Electronic Village? It was a project that was supposed to network the whole town together. All kinds of hype about it. And it's useless. Off campus broadband is only supplied by 1 company, and its 60 bucks a month for 384k DSL. what a ripoff. the modem pool is slow as sh1t, and it's 10 bucks a month.

On campus is pretty bad too. My freshman year, we had 1 ethernet port per room, and that was only in 1/4 of the buildings. The rest of the dorms had this sh1tty as "ROLM" phone system, which was basically a 9600 modem in a phone, connected through your parallel port. Talk about absolute garbage. meanwhile all my friends at other, supposedly less "technologically advanced" colleges had 2 ports per room in most dorms.

VT is suck.

Yeah we have ROLM too.

See, rolm and TR are both IBM technologies, and we're 8 miles north of IBM headquarters.

You can change the port that Napster goes out with. Try ports like 7788. That should not be capped or even used. As for scour you can try the secondary port and see what happens. Probably less people on it if it is capped.

hahahaha I heard about the slow connection speeds at UCLA. Glad I got out when it was still good, and now I'm on my ADSL with 35ms ping. Mmmmmmmmmm good. I heard the speeds were good the first day though, then they screwed with it. I think it's pretty lame to cap the game ports... considering how little bandwidth they take up compared to napster or scour. Also, considering scour was made by UCLA students... they should at least support our own guys =P

hans007, go to File, Preferences, then click on the "Sharing" tab. Towards the bottom there is a port number text box.:)

I believe your firewall (if you're behind one) will have to have that port open for this to work, though.

It's probably because of the new reshall (De Neve is it?)... which adds a couple hundred or so students to resnet... when I was at UCR last year, they expanded resnet by 3x (added 2 reshalls), and for the first few weeks, ping was ass and there were PL spikes like crazy... also transfers were < 40k/s... when they fixed it, I was u/ling at 300k/s, u/ling at 100k/s, and d/ling at 100k/s all while having a 30 ping in qwtf :) Ain't a 100mb resnet line grand? ;)

bUnMaNGo: UCR! ;)

i was in a&i last year, first couple weeks was utter crap, after that though, speeds were Blazing :)

right now it's ok, with pentland and stonehaven on the ethernet also it got a bit slower, still way above t-1 speeds though. hehe

Man, I didn't know my uni was so good...EVERY room has 1 or 2 10mb ethernet ports, with no caps that I am aware of on anything :D

i'm getting .5 k /sec from people ON CAMPUS on napster. We've got 100mb/s switches, so i think something is wrong. An AIM file transfer on campus is like 1800 k/sec but to my friend at UCSC its like 1 k/sec. But if i use ICQ i get 40k/sec to UCSC.

I go to a small engineering technology school in Georgia (Southern Polytechnic) and we have one T3 for the campus, but only like 500 or so people living on campus and we use 100mb buses. so internet connection is a little slow with a max of about 300kb/sec and across campus network speed is pretty good getting to as much as 11mb/sec. only problem is we have a firewall so no FTP or web page serving. oh well I'm happy.
