I wanted to flame about 6600 GT.

First of all. If you're going to shell out $200+ why not get a 6800 NU instead?
There's no doubt it's a better card.

Here are some common misconceptions.

1) It has good performance close to a 6800 NU.
On some benches they look close to one another. But wth the possibility to unock 6800 NU and gain speed close to a 6800 GT it is definately worth the $30-$50 investment.

2) I want build an SLI system
Wanna SLI? Then the 6600 GT is a waste of money. 1 6800 GT or Ultra outperforms 2 6600 GT SLI.

3) I wanna save money.
If you're going to spend $200+ on a card why waste the oportunity to get one of the best? If you wanna save money then you should be looking at a $150.00 card and not $250.00 card.

Anyone have anything to add?

This is about hating the 6600 GT. Please don't deviate from the topic. And if you have a facination with gay porn please don't bring that here.

Thank you

in my case its not as if i hate the card, but ever since i decided to buy a mid range graphics card its been eating me up inside. they just HAD to make 2 cards in the same price range didn't they :b. the 6800 nu is hte one to get... but the chance of finding it on sale again has me thinking about giving up and just getting the 6600gt.

I totally agree. I currently have two options for my next system -

Keep my current 9800pro and go with an MSI K8N Neo2 with a Winnie 3500+

or

Sacrifice the 3500 for a 3200 and spend an extra $100 to get Nforce 4 and a 6600gt pci-e.

Everyone is telling me to go with the 6600GT option. I won't do this because 1) PCIe has no advantages over AGP as of now. 2) the 9800Pro handles everything I throw at it fine and when I need to upgrade I'll get a 6800U AGP. 3) The 9800 Pro actually performs better than thhe 6600gt at the game I want to play most - HL2

I don't think they have any 6800nu's in PCIe. And really, whats wrong with getting a 6600gt and an SLI board? It's not like you can't upgrade to a PCIe 6800GT later when have better availability and prices..

Welp, the 6600 should be a $150 card and is thus deserving of some hate for being overpriced. But really, don't hate the playa, hate the game (i.e. the cruelties of supply and demand, lackluster competition in the segment and price gouging). ;)

#1. I have owned both the 6600gt and the 6800nu. They really werent that different until the extra pipes on the 6800 were unlocked. Most people in the world (yes, people use computers and they dont visit anandtech and other computer message forums) do not even know what you can soft mod some cards. A 6600gt is more than enough power for most gamers....

Also, the unlocked 6800 I had scored about 9000 on 3dmark03, and the 6600gt scored about 8000. Not a huge performance increase if you ask me. Worth $50 to many people? Yes. But not to a lot more.

#2. People who are looking at 6600gt's probably arent building an sli system, or at least they shouldnt be. The 6600gt isnt targeted for sli systems, but more a mid range card..

#3. Sometimes $200 is all that people have.... must be nice to live in your fantasy land where money grows on trees. A 6600gt will destroy most $150 cards (I'm talking new $150, not used $150 9800pro's).

#4. What was the point of your post?

What's wrong with it is that Edward Lee spent an extra $100 to get about the same performance. ;)

I would get a 6800, but the prices for it in canada are nowhere near the prices for it in US. The cheapest 6800 i've seen is like $350 or so, which is a little more than some people's budget

Exaclty, I dont think that Edward Lee understands that some people just cant afford anything better than a 6600gt.

30-40 dollars is a nice big chunk of change for people on a tight budget. Yet it is difficult not to recommend the 6800 for the performance leap. So you'll just have to wait for the price wars to bring the mid-range cards at a lower price than the high-end cards.

Meanwhile, in the States the 6600GT is starting to show up for around $170.

The 9800 pro does not outperform a 6600GT in HL2. But, IMO, I would stick with the 9800, get an agp athlon 64 board, and pickup a new video card whenever the current generation cards prices drop a bit.

I agree with you about what I should do as far as upgrade wise, but I beg to differ about the 6600gt vs. 9800pro in HL2. Take a look - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...display/half-life.html

In most of the tests (90%) the 9800pro does just as good or better than the 6600gt AGP or PCIe.
