Gov. guys gave Tesla (The automoble company) all that tax money($465 million) to develop an electric car when it has 416hp and can go from 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds. Their earlier car the Roadster costs $100,000 according to Automobile magazine. The Dept of Energy gave them the money. When will their cars cost lower for the common man? I can't justify them getting all that taxpayer money. Can you?

$100,000 is a hell of a sticker shock when you consider all the home made conversions that cost in the three to five thousand dollar range. Sounds like they have not discovered the economy of off the shelf parts.

The Tesla Model S can easily compete with the luxury sporty cars in their segment on price and features.

I think they are doing a commendable job and I would personally buy one if i was in the market for that type of vehicle.

That is great for Telsa using GOVMENT money to build a sports car when we need an electric Volkswagon.

You have to understand the underlying technological hurdles...

The reason they are targeting pricey vehicles first is to get something with good margins.

A low cost vehicle with great range when they don't have the charging stations in place is difficult because of battery technology. The energy density is not high enough to make a small vehicle because the batteries take up so much space and weigh so much.

There are a number of big innovations on the horizon that could increase energy density by 10-fold, this would bring affordable vehicles to everyone.
