Without taxes everything would go to hell.

LMAO. The statement of a truly brainwashed individual.

explain?

The U.S. and a number of other countries started off with practically 0 taxes and not everything went to hell. In fact, the economy grew at stunning rates.

That's great, only we were caught off guard without an army when the Brits came back in 1812.

Actually, there were plenty of taxes back then. Just no income tax. The concept of a tax on income didn't become popular until after Marx wrote his famous manifesto...

The people actually don't have to pay taxes. Anyone who claims taxes are a necessity is clueless to economics. The government could just print more money to pay for what it needs (assuming that the government was in control of the money supply as it is constitutionally supposed to be, but it is not under our current system). The downside to that of course would be inflation, but we have that anyway.

Sales tax is the worst type of tax.
Absolutely not so. If one must have taxes, the beauty of sales taxes is that out-of-area residents pay them too. At least in this fashion, a sales tax is more than just cannibalism, as income and property taxes are.

is there a country that doesnt have income tax? possibly only sales tax?

IMO this makes sense... you only pay taxes if you buy or sell something.. income is not taxed, so people spend more..

I disagree on defense being useless also.

Defense is one of the ONLY things that makes perfect sense for the federal government to tax on, as only the federal government can provide such protection. Most of what they tax for should be handled by individuals and states, not the country as a whole. However, defense is something the country as a whole needs to take care of.

Or we could eliminate state governments all together and standardize everything. No more amiguous laws between nieghboring states. Save plenty a taxes that way.

Put even more power in the hands of the federal government? Brilliant!

The public works programs got the country out of the depression only because the country mortgaged itself over its head in debt that we still have not paid off to this day (in fact, we keep getting deeper). Think of it like this: you lost your job for a few years, so to get yourself back on your feet, you took out a huge interest-only variable-rate loan that you will never pay back for as long as you live. That's how the US got out of the great depression.
As a banker, let me tell you that bankers love people who think like you. And it is bankers who currently control everything having to do with money in the US. This is their system, their fascism.

I'm sorry... and who won the War of 1812?

Although it isn't a country, doesn't Dubai have no income tax?

Hmmmm.. I haven't seen CPA or the other tax guys in this thread yet...

But, let me take a shot at answering your question:

If you moved more than (40?) miles (which I assume, since you got a hotel room), your moving expenses are tax deductible? Thus, you gained $4000 in income from the employer reimbursing you, but you get to write off that $4000 making it all cancel out.

Or, were you hoping to have a net profit from this? (i.e. deduct the moving expenses, but not count the income that was paid to you to offset those expenses?)

Not enough deductions to itemize
I moved 500 miles. I lived in a hotel for 18 days and paid over $2000 for it on my credit card. My company cut me a check for the expenses. They filed that reimbursement of mine as "income". If you look at it, I came out even. I submitted my expeneses for mileage, meals and the hotel stay. Paid about $2700 for everything, and I got a check for exactly what I paid for everything. I didn't make any money on the deal.

Edit: Im not trying to make any money on the deal, I just dont want to pay taxes on my reimbursement. Im supposed to pay like $930 in taxes on the deal.

Read again.... unless I'm mistaken, you get to *deduct* the $2700 on your taxes... you don't have to pay tax on that $2700. (Assuming you itemize)

I dont itemize, not enough deductions to do so, so it still screws me.

taxes are needed for some stuff like defense (military), roads, police, etc... not all the welfare programs tho

that aside, it is stupid to count the reimbursement as "income" - but whoever said that the ppl in washington were smart?

You're right Keynes had it all wrong.

Countries got out of the GD partly due to the war, wherein the gov spent huge amounts of money to kickstart the economy through defense contracts

Indeed he did. His theories have been pretty much been shot to sh!t for a long time.

Pump priming is bullsh!t.

actually that's incorrect. Prior to income tax, the federal government relied upon tarrifs and other duties. Most states began taxing their citizens well before the federal government.

As for your arguement reguarding other countries, no state has had 0 taxes. In fact most economic theories on the development of democracracies deal explicitly with taxes. e.g production profile.

Lots of countries don't.

Dubai does not.
Monaco.
Most Carribbean countries do not.

yes but the governments of those countries have an alternative source of revenue, such as oil. The side effect of the government deriving revenue from natural resources rather than taxes tends to be an autocratic rule.

Those taxes were tiddly winks compared to today's monster of a behemouth tax state.

Now we have the tarriffs, duties and excises with income taxes, property taxes, car taxes, sales taxes, licensing taxes etc. to boot.

I didn't say they had 0 taxes. What I meant to say is that the tax burden was extremely low compared to today's standards. In addition to that commerce was much less regulated.

LMAO. The public works projects did no such thing.

Are you joking me? There is this little place called the private sector where people earn an honest wage without having to tax anyone else.

Jeeeeeebus the propaganda/misconceptions runs thick around here.

holy cow. we live in a federal state, there are taxes, live with it. Since you have such an angst against "the man," how about you give a solution outside of federalism that can cut the bureaucracy and provide services for hundreds of millions of people.

Its the same goddamn thing.

ARGH @#$)*(&#@$*)@#&$)* government.

Income used for relocation may be deductable. Better ask CPA.

Ok, here is my plan. It can be summed up in three words:

End It Now

What is the 'End It Now' plan? Shut the bureaucracies down now. Not later, not in 10 years to be 'phased out.' I mean literally shut down all non-essential bureaucracies immediately and forever.

Ever hear in the news about how the government was shutting down for a day or two? Ever notice anything different in your daily routine? I sure haven't.

wow.

first, what are non-essential bureaucracies? To an extent this is subjective, e.g. some can say NASA funding is pointless.

second, if this ever happened, I think it would be safe to say that the US would be over as we know it. Any such change is impossible to sustain w/o causing drastic change of society.

Incrementalism. Changes don't happen over night, and to say that a society can be sustained without taxes is irrational. Federalism is the best we got now, and I'd prefer not to have a coup d'etat.

NASA is quite pointless. It is definately a non-essential bureaucracy. What bureaucracies should be shut down tomorrow? Any bureaucracy that isn't literally keeping people alive/safe from physical danger (and that doesn't include the FDA or any bureaucracy along those lines, mainly just police and fire protection).

second, if this ever happened, I think it would be safe to say that the US would be over as we know it. Any such change is impossible to sustain w/o causing drastic change of society.

We live mired in tax slavery. Any drastic change from where we are at now to where we used to be pre-WW1 would be great.

Incrementalism.

Is precisely what bureaucracy thrives on. A little bit bigger, a little bit more intrusive, a little bit more expensive...

Changes don't happen over night, and to say that a society can be sustained without taxes is irrational. Federalism is the best we got now, and I'd prefer not to have a coup d'etat.

No coup d'etat needed. Current politicians could stay in place. Just shut down the bureaucracies.
