So far I gave you two problems with it. My personal problem and the problem with legit games being banned. If you would like to see more go check out the tech support forums on steam's site. They are full of people with different problems and no responses from a single valve employee despite your insistance there is.

So Injury, you tell me: why the hell is it EVER acceptable that I would not be allowed to play Half-Life 2 single player because they released a new update for Counterstrike: Source?

What if I don't want to use offline mode? What if I *do* want to receive content updates from Valve as they are released, but still want to play my single player games in the meantime?

Why are you so frigging stupid that you can't see the flaw inherent in putting the authentication services and content delivery services on the same frigging server? How braindead can you possibly be?

There has been, since December, a way to run steam in "offline mode" so that you can play single player without having to connect to the internet. At the beginning of the year my internet service was down for 3 days straight and I played HL2 single player with no problems.

And that's supposed to be a valid excuse for Valve's poor decision to put their authentication service and file delivery service on the same servers?

Because of steam, valve anti-piracy has already banned a number of accounts... and I haven't even noticed it checking. People who use stolen accounts, pay with stolen CCs, and pirate the game deserve to be banned. I have no complaint about the authentication processes because I haven't been banned for using my perfectly legal copy and I haven't been inconvienced by it.

What about the *legal* users who have been banned, huh? What about the fact that the pirates who get banned just create new accounts, generate new keys, and are right back on?

What about the fact that the ONLY ones TRULY inconvenienced by the anti-piracy measures are the legal, legitimate users?

Individual games don't update until you go to play them in specific... which if there is an update for the game you'd have to get anyway otherwise people would be playing "different" games. How exactly is it safe for you to be updating games while you are playing them? And you're calling ME stupid?? I read exactly what you wrote and replied to exactly what you wrote. There is nothing in Valve's license agreement about disabling your OS or any software unrelated to their games, nor would it be acceptable for them to mess with any files for games they didn't publish. Assuming that for some reason they will is a logical falicy called "slippery-slope". If you don't know what that is, I suggest you google it and find out before you use this ridiculous argument anymore.

It seems to me like you just want to hate steam because you are an elitist jackass who thinks he can do everything so much better. I'm happy to support a company that is doing a good job of making updating a game easier, finding what servers my friends are on easier, and making sure that the prices of their games don't have to sky rocket because some dick thinks he shouldn't have to pay for it. One thing is for sure, I won't be sitting around waiting for updates or getting banned.

Hey, earth to genius...if an update is available for Counterstrike: Source, it OVERLOADS Valve's servers so that no one can be authenticated for Half-Life 2.

No need to turn this into a flame fest. There is absolutely no way you are going to turn injury from his blind adoration to Valve and Steam. He is already in the mentality of "it doesn't affect me so I don't care," so no amount of telling him what has happened to you or others will ever matter to him. It's like saying I don't care if people are racist so long as its not against me. But hey, it's his choice if he wants to live that way.

Steam is there to take control away from the consumer and give it to the developer. There are plenty of ways to implement a software update system without having to log on and authenticate your copy each time. Hell, windows has a better system built into the OS. Even offline mode obviously does because those who use offline mode were still shutout when some of the auth servers went down (assuming they had an internet connection). People have also said numerous times that offline mode doesn't always work, but that won't change injury's mind either as per the above reason.

Sorry if this is a repost, but it looks like there's issues starting to come up about the legality of the EULA for HL-2. I wondered when this was going to comeup. Nothing mentioned on the box about what you really need to do to get the game running.

Bought Half Life 2 this week, with any luck I'll be able to play it in 8 weeks..

Turns out somebody already used the CD key, on my supposedly new retail copy, and the procedure to fix this problem takes up to 8 weeks.

I am not impressed.
