Same here. Not to mention, steam automatically downloads the patch and installs it for you. Updates for me have never been more then a few minutes.

It just seems like everyone is always posting the same old crap about how steam sucks... with providing far more BS in there posts. *sigh*

Yes, it's BS that I couldn't play my Steam-powered games a few days ago because Valve released a patch. Musta just been my imagination.

There is simply no justification for it to be okay that Steam renders games completely unusable any time servers are under too much load. You fanboys can sit here and claim BS all day, but the simple fact of the matter is that the way Steam handles updates and game authentication could've been a lot better. Hell, even Microsoft does it better, by giving you a clear and easy option to have the OS notify you when updates are available, to let you, with a few clicks of the mouse, automate the retrieval and installation of them. And it's stupidly obvious that Valve should have separated the authentication side of Steam from the file transfer side, especially knowing the high volume of bandwidth that would be going through Steam's servers.

Instead, you just insist on tossing out crap like this, attacking the credibility and intelligence of all who disagree with you just because they're not as willing to fellate Valve's member thinking that it can do no wrong. Tell that to a friend of mine, who's CD key was deactivated before he ever even tried using the game - he was one of many ATi owners who were supposed to get Half-Life 2 through Steam after having bought an ATi video card.

I bought Half-Life 2, and I'm glad I did. I haven't even played it much yet but I'm already impressed with it. (Only reason I haven't spent much time on it is because I already have a bunch of games on my plate.) But the ignorance displayed here is just palpable. It's ridiculous.

Exactly, and there's no excuse for it, because the simple fact is, it could have been implemented so much better than it is.

Can someone please enlighten me? I would like to try and play Half-life (original) using steam with the updated graphics. Do I have to buy HL2 in order to play 1 of my favorite old games?

Thanks,

Bud

Yes, more specifically at least the silver edition, which means you have to pay MORE for hl2 to get hl:s.

Hmmm. I just installed HL2 and I keep getting an error when trying to create a Steam account. Something about "error 200 connection reset by peer."

I tried the Steam forums, but they mostly point to a page that has a bunch of stuff about changing your router and firewall, and I'm not really familiar enough with that stuff to know quite what they're talking about. Plus I'd be surprised if I had to do all this just to play this game - I would think that a lot of people who bought HL2 don't even know what a firewall is.

I did a quick search on Google for an answer to my problems, but haven't found any relevant results yet.
I know piracy is a problem, but I paid good money for this game, and I can't play it until I figure out what's going on. That sucks.

I wonder what will take longer - finding an answer to my problem, or locating a crack to play HL2 without Steam?

So here's a nice update. Wondering if my username might be too short or need numbers or something stupid like that, I typed a very uninspired string of expletives into the account field followed by a similar string if the password field.
Signed right on to steam no problem.

I tried creating a new, not so profane account with variations of my chosen username/pwd, but none of them worked. So I guess I'm stuck with that account - I hope steam doesn't ban people for that.

Then I went to register my HL2 game - typed the CD key in, and guess what? I got a nice error message from steam saying that my subscription is pending becaue the steam servers can't process my key right now. They did apologize for the inconvenience while noting that I wouldn't be able to play my game until they decided to get their sh!t together.
This is ridiculous.

I have to go to a lunch, but if this isn't resolved by the time I get home, ... well, I'm playing HL2 tonight one way or another.
What idiots.

I can't log into my Steam account right now either. I'm in Westchester and I have two friends on LI that can connect just fine. I think one of the Steam authentication servers is down, as it's being reported on the Steam forums right now.

Honestly this is my first prolem with Steam, usually it's transparent. I hope they resolve this soon.

Just an FYI to everyone who can't login - its hit and miss. The Steam forums and getting hammered right now by all the angry kids who can't play CS.

My CyberCafe accounts are all down right now, so no one here can play at all. I know they're working on it, but this is probably the worst time for something like this to happen.

hahaha yeah, it's pretty funny how they all ignore all the other posts and constantly make a billion more threads whining about "omg i h4v3 been h4xed!!!" and "omg i teh klill sue lawyer valve now! fix me!"

pretty weird though, this is the first time it's ever happened to me, but it's been broken all day 🙁

The game appears to be working after a lengthy download.
I still hate steam and wonder if I'm going to get in trouble for having an account named steamisapileofsh!t

haha nice name. Steam still down here in california, although I have three accounts and one of them works (damnit though, the one that work is one of mine that doesn't have HL2...)

1 for me, which has HZL1 + HL2, one for my brother w/ HL1 which he doesn't use very often, if at all, and 1 extra from somone who never plays so he gave me his CD key.

Still down for me.

Honestly, I have been aware of Steam's problems since its birth, but I have always supported what Valve's trying to do with it, and I think it's a good idea. And actually, after HL2 finally came out they were updating things like crazy, and lately I've been very happy with Steam overall. Very quick loading, smooth game saving, they redid the file structure, etc. However, this is the first problem I've encountered, and it really does piss me off that I can't play single player because Steam is down. They MUST incorporate a good, working offline mode. Something that just automatically launches if it fails to connect, to allow you to do SP stuff and mapping.

They should make it optional. That would be a better solution.

So thats better than the old days. Where you want to play HL1 just to find out you need a point release. But then you find out the only way to get that point release is to get it from file planet and theres a 3 hour wait just to start the download. So you end up spending all day getting patches. Yea, okay then.

Well stupid is as stupid does. Valve was a bit stupid then, and much stupid now.

For example with Id games I just head on down to ftp.idsoftware.com

Steam doesn't solve any problems that haven't been solved a thousand times over by much better and saner solutions.

Same here... I've never had a problem where I couldn't log in. The only complaint I have about it is it doesn't remember my filter settings so I have to reset them every time I go looking for CS:S servers.

Actually, I like the solution. Streaming content works nicely. And is really just adopted from MMORPGs which have been doing it for a long awhile now. It is really the way to go.

If you say so. I download and keep up to date entire operating systems, and yet I don't have to give up control of my computer to a online server. But if you don't mine somebody else running the show, then I guess steam is acceptable.

the only problem ive had lately is the lag & the fact that too many bots will slow up the game...i think my processor (xp 2500+) is the bottleneck for this game as im using a leadtek 6800gt...does suck having to be forced to be online to play a game...
