There are vastly more people who hate Steam than those who like it. It's just weird how Valve is still using a system that the majority of their customers hate.
Valve is just getting people used to using it.
They'll fix the protocol problems and get powerfull enough servers eventually so that everybody can use it seemlessly.
What I figure is that Valve is using CS:S and HL2 fans as guinea pigs for a new business model based around digital rights management technology.
It's always been like this, most gamers don't give a crap about rights or anything like that, they just want convienence and good games and are willing to put up with a tremendious amount of crap in order to get it.
Case in point: places like Fileshack, Gamespy, and such. I hate it when I go to download a mod or something like that and all the mirrors are linked to places like that. I don't understand how poeple put up with crap like that... Ads up the wazoo, timed waits, horrificly difficult to navigate websites, pop-ups, broken links, weird subscription scemes. Everything that is wrong with the internet packed into a few "gaming" websites.
So Valve knows that you won't like it, they know that they will have screwed up servers time to time while they work out the bugs in there systems. And they also know that while people b1tch and moan, they will line up like good little boys and hand their money over for the "next big thing" just as long as they get the marketting right.
So you pay, they perfect the technology and when times come to use it to distribute things like subscription based movies rentals and other software over the internet they won't risk pissing off people that wouldn't put up with it. They'll sells services and software to other companies and that's probably were they are hoping to make most of the money from, even if future games tank. (which they won't)
At least that's what I figure. Probably wrong on a few counts, but so far it seems accurate.

The second you subscribe to Fileplanet, you can remove all of the ads. Horribly difficult to navigate? Not even close, probably one of the easiest websites to navigate. Wait times are also removed on subscription.
Hosting files has become a giant bandwidth hog and that is why sites like Fileplanet have to go to extremes to stay in business. When you are hosting what they are to the world, I'd like to see how long you can keep it a free service.

Damn straight. The internet is Peer 2 Peer. It is now, as it always has been, and hopefully will always be. Don't forget that when you connect to the internet your machine is a much as a part of it as Fileplanet or any other entity is. Everybody is on the same level... except bandwidth aviable, of course.
Hell even the same exact software they use for hosting (besides scripts and such) you can go and download yourself and use it at no cost, and I'd bet that the computer your sitting in front of is as powerfull and fast as the nicest servers they use. (of course they have many more servers then just one)
Not that I am against subsciption services, if they are worth it. So don't get me wrong. But if I can pay thru donating bandwidth, I do. After all it's a commodity and not something I can hang onto, and it doesn't do much of anything else for the majority of the time.

Yes, steam sucks. What sucks worse is Valve's customer support. Mainly because it does not exist. If you have a problem you are SOL.

I'm sure they're very similar to any other dev house in customer support issues meaning they most likely get about 7000 emails / threads posted a day from users with stupid ass questions and have only a few people handling them. It's just completely overwhelming.
For the record, I hadnt restarted steam for a few weeks, so I did last night to grab the updates... it took all of about one minute and everything was good to go. I really have a feeling that most problems users are having are PEBKAC/PICNIC issues and not actual steam problems.

I love how when someone has a legitimate problem with steam there are always fanboys like this guy chirping in. And yes, I will be putting my money where my mouth is, and I will never buy another game using steam.

Good for you. Support the publishers who have nothing to do at all with the product. I prefer giving my money to Valve and not Vivendi, who I feel have not only delivered a first rate game in a sea of mediocrity but have the balls to attempt something new and bring more revenue to their house. Steam is a fantastic idea and a fantastic product. I really hope many other dev sheds decide to use it once the few kinks are ironed out.
The truth of the matter is that out of everyone that complains about how terrible Steam is, there's a load of people that have had no problems at all and decide to not voice their opinion on a message board completely unrelated to Valve's forums... you know... where you should be posting complaints instead of bitching about it to people who can't do a damn thing to help you out.
Fanboy? Yes. You're goddamn right I am. Everything Valve has released is gold.
And to spacelord, you have the stupidest complaint out of them all... You're angry that Valve is still trying to make their product better by patching and updating, simply because you're an impatient sod. Run Steam all the time as it was intended and the downloads will, 9 times out of 10, be ready when you want to play NOW.
There have been billions of threads with more descriptive reasons why Steam sucks, I guess you just missed those?
For one, when they changed to Steam from WON, 2(maybe 3, can't even remember anymore) of the keys me and my friends use to play CS became unusable.
Solution: Send the jewel cases across the globe to Valve, yeah right, S&H is gonna cost more than they did to begin with, gee thanks :roll:
Steam is dog slow to update the server list most of the time.
Needing it to play Half Life 2 is bull$hit to begin with.
And in the end, it's given me exactly one useful feature, autojoin on free slot.
Yeah, that's about even for pros and cons... :roll:

People aren't just complaining for the hell of it. They are complaining because they have problems. Since you are experiencing none, you immediately write off everyone elses problems as their fault. Sorry, but software development does not work like that. If it did, my job would be a hell of a lot easier.

I just started using Steam with my HL2 purchase, so its only been a little while. I don't have any complaints myself other than I don't see any way of adding HL:S to my steam account(I never played the original, so I thought it might be fun). I like Steam and the update feature myself, my games are always patched. I don't recall not being able to play CS:S either, I just might have luckily missed all the server outages I guess.
