i hate steam

Yeah I think it's BS for you to be prevented from using software because other software says it's too busy.
 
screw hl2dm, I wan't TF2!!!

and steam does suck the big one indeed. just the other day I noticed that my steam installation had raped my separate half-life installation, so everytime I fired up the stand alone half life, steam would be triggered.

No, no you can't. When steam says it's busy, you cannot run ANY valve games.
 
I ran into that problem on Sunday, where I couldn't play HL2 because it said Steam was busy or couldn't connect. what a crock.
 
I too hate Steam, but AFTER HL2 is updated, you should be able to play any time offline (start Steam in Offline mode). Unfortunately, since I'm stuck with dialup for the next few weeks, it took me 3 hours to DL updates and crap before I could even play. Pissed me right off. Now, though, I can play when I want. It is a stupid system...you should be able to play the game out of the box, without having to download key components of the game. If they want you to authorize the CD-Key, hey, I can deal with that, but that should be a 15 second, one time thing, and that's it.
