You suspect it was squirrels that chewed through the lid to get to the garbage? More likely: rats.

Could've been either one.......but I'd bet the damn squirrels goaded them into it!!!

squirrels are basically rats with a fluffy tail...

I was actually going to catch one and let it live in my house (that is, once i have a house). Just let it grow used to me, hopefully keep it as a pet.

I like em

one time i parked in the street near one of my favorite restaurants. i looked across the yard to the house i parked in front of. inside the window was sitting a squirrel. i thought it was just a statue but then it moved and left. about 20 seconds later a cat came by and perched in the window.

not really sure what was going on, normally squirrels don't go into the living areas.
A squirrel AND a cat? Working TOGETHER? Be afraid, be very afraid.

When I first moved into my new home, we did a lot of remodeling. Tearing down wallpaper, etc., and had tons of trash.

The first time I put trash out, I rolled the 1 container (city provided/looks like one in link) down to the curb totally full! I had 2 extra HEFTY trash bags full of tear down crap from the house and 2 empty pizza boxes inside!

The next morning there was wallpaper all over the fucking yard! So now I pay $7. more per mth for an extra one of these. Never had a problem since ;)

Get one of the Big plastic bins w/wheels from Lowe's or HD. These are pretty tough!!
EXAMPLE

It's nice when I have company too. With 4 extra people over for a week, it helps to have another bin.

spent all day driving around trying to find a metal garbage can, but no luck :( home depot didn't have any garbage cans whatsoever and ace/target only had plastic.

anyone know of a place online to buy them?

in the meantime, I covered my garbage can with red pepper... hopefully they eat some and stay the hell away.

If they're chewy, you're not cooking them right :)
Regardless, they're delicious.

Oh, and for steel garbage cans - check out hardware stores, and if you're lucky enough to have stores that cater more toward farmers, check there. (i.e. Tractor Supply Co.) We have quite a few steel garbage cans. (They work great for keeping animal feed in. They're essentially mice/rat/squirrel/chipmunk/weather proof.)
