I hate snow

Ok for the last few years, we have gotten very little snow here. Maybe 2-3 real snowfalls during winter, snow melting within a week. So last year I had my snow tires on, which don't really help at all seeing as how I drive a front-wheel drive car which sucks in snow no matter how nice of snow tire you have. Of course half the time there isn't even any snow to speak of, so I'm just burning tread.

This year I decide I'm not going to bother with the snow tires. They don't help and there just isn't enough snow to matter. So what happens? It snows 6-7 times by January, and today it seems all the snow we ever got last year dropped overnight. Just ridiculous.

Any suggestions for a cheap(new) AWD or RWD car/truck/SUV? I was thinking Dodge Caliber, they sell like hotcakes and can come in AWD.

FWD rocks in the snow. WTF are you talking about?

BTW, i grewup driving a 67 Mustang with snow tires in the winter. It got me to the Sierras on fresh days. What more could one ask for?

Oops, i forgot to mention that i almost slid off a cliff in that mustang trying to get first chair one day when i was 18. If you cant drive in the snow with all seasons in a FWD vehicle dont drive in the snow. Period.

Um, I drive just fine in 4WD, AWD, and RWD in the snow, zero problems. FWD is the absolute worst in the snow and I still have no freaking clue why some people think it's good. My best friend feels exactly the same way. We just don't understand why people like it.

FWD is much better than RWD in the snow. Weight over the powered tires makes it much easier to control. I can't even make it up the driveway in my Mustang.

There will be snow on the ground here for the next month, at least. So bite me.

Having the wheels that direct your car also have the power means greater chance of coasting across into the wrong lane of traffic rather than turning into that side street unless you slow waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down. In my last car which was RWD, I barely had to slow down when driving in snow. When I turned, the car freaking turned. Having the power in the back made it EASIER in the snow.

..I switched to GF.Goodrich AT mud. Noisy tire but has self cleaning character. Much better in snow and mud then all my previous AT tires. Getting ready to buy a 2nd set for another truck.

Don't believe the hype. I have an AWD vehicle and a FWD vehicle. Both perform about the same in the snow and I don't have any problems with the FWD vehicle.

A lot of the hype surrounding AWD is marketing IMO. I enjoy bringing up the fact that the first vehicles I see off the road during snow storms tend to be AWD/4WD SUVs :D while the FWD cars keep moving on by.

That is not true. The reason you see so many SUV's off the road is because they have idiot drivers. No matter how much safer you make a car, you can't change the driver.

Are you an idiot? FWD is so much better in the snow than RWD. If you can't drive FWD in the snow, you shouldn't be driving. I have a FWD car with all season cheap tires and my car does awesome in the snow. Drove throught the blizzard we had here just fine. Better than RWD Explorers and other crap.

If you don't slow down in a snow storm and just drive normal speeds in your RWD, you are the biggest fvcking idiot in the world and one of the reasons why there are wrecks.

Greater chance of coasting into the wrong lane with FWD? That's ridiculous. If you know how to drive and how to take control of a skid there is no problems. With RWD you are more apt to just spin your car around or something else stupid.

Except everything you just said is completely wrong. I have never gotten in a wreck. I have been driving in snow since I got my first car. I have had 3 professional driving jobs. I have driven dozens of different kinds of cars in the snow. All my experience has pointed to me being able to drive much, much more comfortably with AWD or RWD in the snow. Everything you said is absolutely backwards for my experience.

Now if you could all quit with the retarded comments and actually suggest a damn car, the point to the thread, that'd be great. You are wasting your time replying if all you are going to do is disagree with me.

There's a lot to be said for winter driving skills...I learned to drive with RWD, and prefer it overall to FWD, even though, FWD can indeed be better in the snow. (weight over the drive axle, pulling the car, instead of pushing it, etc) but if I actually HAD to drive in snow, I'd prefer an AWD or 4X4 over FWD anyday. Also. most "all-season" tires really aren't meant for anything more than 1-2 inches of light snow...after that, you need proper snow tires...

Dude, malak you are missing the point.

IN FWD you can let off the gas and it will do what you want it to.

In RWD if you let off the gas, the force gets redirected to the front tires.

Simple physics. In both cases too much sucks. I'm sure it is easier to turn with RWD but not if you don't have traction in either FWD/RWD.

No, you are missing the point. I want an AWD/RWD car period. Your jibba jabba means absolutely nothing to me because I always drive better with those than FWD.

Malak... FWD is far easier. I drove FWD for my first 2 years of driving. As long as you aren't a moron and attempt to take corners too fast or accelerate while turning, it is a very simple process.

FOR YOU. What part of this is so hard to understand? It is not "far easier" for me. What kind of arrogant bullshit have you guys got that keeps you from understanding this concept called subjective perspective? Damn, everything has to be an arguement around here.

They don't sell like hotcakes. Those are mostly rental cars you see on the road.

They can't keep them on the lots. My dad worked for Dodge when they released. They are selling like crazy. I haven't seen any caliber rentals.
