Why do I as a healthy individual have no right to my health by forbidding my sick coworkers from coming in and hacking and snotting all over the place?
They can't smoke next to me, why the hell are they allowed to sneeze next to me?

Ehhhh... get over it. As long as they aren't coughing on you, how is it a problem. Just keep your hands clean.

as long as employers can fire employees based on attendance issues alone this will always be a problem..
sorry i go to work sick unless its major.. casue I dont want to lose my job..
and I dont even ever use all my sickdays...

Because nothing would ever get done. I've had the sniffles and a cough for the last few days. So I'm supposed to take a week off because of such?

thats the main problem. they tend to fire people who use the sick time a lot.

I always had a policy of if you are sick stay home. I didnt want you in the office. There would be not repracutions for it. Trouble is people started to abuse it. when someone is sick 2+ a month for almost a year its BS.

Like I others have said, missed time is held against you. Even if it is for a good reason.

Add to that, the amount of sick time allotted to some places. Where I work we only get 16 hours (2 days) a year of sick and/or personal time. Yes, you can roll it over at the end of the year... But how many people do you think actually hold on to 16 hours after a year?

While I agree with you... The current system bullies employees to go to work even while they are severly sick.

Somewhat suprised no one has mentioned this already, but if I don't go to work, I lose a day's pay. Your health is not worth that much to me. 😛

I am one of those people that tries to avoid spreading infection, however.

As has been mentioned, this is a product of american business values. Also, if there's no paid sick time...I'm going to work.

When they are showing symptoms like that, they aren't nearly as contagious as what they were a few days before the symptoms started.

So, it's likely you've already been exposed to his/her sickness.
