I hate shaving

I've tried various things.

Disposable Razors
Gillette Fusion
Gillette Fusion Power
Schick Quatro
A $90 electric razor (can't remember the name)
And even my latest Merkur double edge safety razor, with and without shaving soap.

Shaving cream/shaving soap gives me razor burn. Not using it is a little better, but with or without I get a terrible shave. Nothing gets close enough, and I've got a shadow right after shaving, even when going with then against the grain. Shaving in the shower is a little easier on my face, but it still doesn't get close enough. The Merkur seems like my best option at this time, but it tears up my face (I must be using it wrong).

Am I just hopeless or is there some kind of trick I'm missing?

I'm tempted to go pay a barber to give me a shave to see if I'm the one fucking up.
 
Hair Removal Method No. 2: Electrolysis

What It Is : The only method of hair removal that is permitted to be called "permanent," electrolysis uses a tiny needle that slides down into the hair follicle until it reaches the cells responsible for hair growth.

"Electrolysis destroys the cells that cause the hair to grow. The hair will release and slide right out and it won't grow back there again -- it's permanent removal," says Patsy Kirby, executive director of the American Electrology Association in Bodega Bay, Calif.

The process can be uncomfortable, but local anesthetic creams can help.

Best For : Like other forms of hair removal, it is safe to do electrolysis anywhere on the body, though Kirby says the most popular place for women is the face.

How Long It Takes : Though the system requires that the removal be done hair-by-hair, Kirby says it's not as daunting a task as it might seem. "It can take up to 25 sessions, depending on how much you need removed, but each session may only be 5 or 10 minutes long," says Kirby.

Cost: Costs run between $40 and $90 per treatment, with 10 to 25 treatments (or more) sometimes necessary for permanent, lasting results.

Potential Drawback : Electrolysis can cause tiny scars where the needle is inserted. Though for most people they heal unnoticed, for blacks it means an increased risk of hyperpigmentation and formation of keloids. Thus, it's not recommended for this skin type.

Cost will vary by geographics area.

Best bet is to let your fingers do the walking.
 
I got a nice shaving kit for xmas with a safety razor, badger hair brush, lather, etc... can't wait to try it out.

I hear bad things happen if you shave with these in a straight across type of move, if you catch my drift. 😉

I haven't been able to find a decent one around London or Kingston that isn't stupid expensive.
 
I used to hate the dammed double-edge safety razors...When Gillette came out with the Trac2 in the early 70's (I think) it made shaving SO much better.

OP, I too hate shaving...and after 30+ years, that hate hasn't gone away in the slightest...in fact, it's only gotten worse.

If you get razor burn, try shaving with cold water. Shaving against the grain MAY cause face irritation. For me, it often causes ingrown hairs/whiskers.

I've always been glad I have a lot of "blanket-ass" Indian in my bloodlines. I never grew much facial hair until about 10-15 years ago.

try antique shops or older barber shops.
 
I hate to say it but the only common denominator here is you. Maybe you just never learned how to shave properly?
 
Try using the back end of the electric razor (for beard trimming or whatever it is) and get the hairs down low. Then use the regular electric, then use shaving cream + razor. They have a lot of different kinds of shaving cream - might want to try something w/o alcohol or a gel or ...something different if you're having problems.
 
I'm using a Merkur double edge and shaving soap myself. I still have areas that I get cut pretty often because I shave against the grain. No razor I've owned will get close enough by going with the grain. All I can say is that it takes patience and practice. In the meantime, you might want to invest in a septic pen to seal those cuts. They sting, but damn they do wonders.
