A coworker of mine just sent out this email to everyone in our department:
1. She almost never works overtime, so she doesn't rely on that money to pay her "bills"
2. She lives with her mom, and her only "bills" are a car payment and student loan payments.
3. Her overtime this week will be less than 5 hours.
I made a donation to the Red Cross this weekend with what I thought I could afford, but didn't feel like I had to broadcast it.
Anyone else get shit like this from co-workers, others?

This is bullshit for the following reasons:I am donating all of my overtime $$ this week to Haiti - suggest you do the same. This is not really "extra" money for me; paying bills this month will be a tight squeeze, and I will have to sacrifice things I wanted to buy and do. But media coverage of the earthquake has really moved me. This morning learning that already homeless, injured, grieving and destitute families withstood yet another huge aftershock, I remember that in the face of disaster (or injustice, or inequality), there is always *something* I can do.
This represents the least I can do.
My preference is WorldVision, an organization I have worked with personally and greatly respect. They are a Christian nonprofit, but do not discriminate on the basis of religion. Also, they put basic needs (in particular for children) above proselytizing. Where I lived in Bolivia, they offered Christmas sponsorships through which my host mom was able to buy her youngest son a new bed, a winter jacket and a bicycle; notebooks and coats for schoolchildren; summer sports camps free of charge and leadership training for adolescents and teachers. You can check out what they're doing in Haiti here
Also, there has been an outpouring of support for the American Red Cross, which you can find here. I am so proud of that US goverment and private donations have led the relief effort.
The above are just suggestions. Please get involved with any community, national or international effort of your choosing. The important thing is to get involved.
