I hate Rogers' Bandwidth Limit

So about halfway through June, I decided to download all sorts of games and movies in preparation for the summer after my exams ended :). So I downloaded Crysis, Gears of War, a season of MythBusters, World in Conflict, etc. Rogers Express, their default highspeed, plan offers you a 7 MBit DL and 0.5 MB UL connection with a 60 GB total bandwidth limit per month. If you exceed it, it's $2.50 per GB I think.

So after a couple weeks of pirating, I decided to check the usage just to make sure I wasn't going over. The billing period, as you'll soon see, is to end on June 26th (inclusive) after the limit resets. So I checked on the 24th of June, and THIS is what I saw. HOLY SHIT. I was almost over the limit, and I still had a bunch of pirating left to do! So I put it all on hold, stopped watching YouTube videos and everything. I'm not gonna pay $2.50 per GB, that's bullshit. So the next day, because my family also uses the connection, I reached: June 25th.

WHOA. Okay 110 MB for one day. That's feasible if I don't do anything more than text browsing. Well I tried... and I FAILED.

SHIT! That's like three bucks for 250 MB. WTF. But somehow, they rounded down and it showed 60 GB usage for the month and I didn't get charged. But seriously, WTH is this shit. 60 GB is that much. I went through it in about two weeks, and I wasn't even pirating thaaaat much, I was also occasionally studying for exams and watching TV.

For all you guys in the States and elsewhere, what restrictions do your ISPs impose on you?

BTW, check out what one telco is doing in Japan: Article.

Rogers knows I pirate. I ended up with a C&D letter on behalf of the MPAA or something a year or two ago. Fake tracker :|

I have the same package from Rogers.

They are having issues with their bandwidth tracker. I have downloaded diddly and my usage says 75%. I asked them about it when I payed my bill and they told me there are issues with it and that warning they give you.

The only thing you can rant on is that Rogers charges you too much to steal things?

I fight to hold back the tears for the good old fashioned Bank/Store Robbers. The price of Gas these days must be killing their Profits. :(

I dropped rogers and went with acanac. No limit and 19 bux a month tax in (for the one year contract). Working on dropping cable tv next and then cell from rogers. They have pissed me off too many times.

lol, you used your precious bandwidth to download a season of Mythbusters. The savings in bandwidth could have paid for netflix or whatever you have in Canada.

Hmm, so its only 25$ more for actual "unlimited" bandwidth (maximum 25$). Thats not that bad.

It is bogus the bandwidth limits (with any ISP).

There are plenty of articles out there now that refute it is a problem. They need to upgrade and invest this money into the infrastructure and not into nickel and diming. It'll be back like the by the minute plans in the early 90's. Between my wife watching legal tv shows from the websites of the shows, my son gaming and downloading and uploading to youtube, my affinity for youtube funny videos, and my love of netflix's watch on demand, we used 6.5 gigs in 3 days. I went around and installed the free version of a net monitoring program.

I uninstalled it because it was just an experiment - but if you extrapolate - 6.5 gigs - 3 days - 10x6.5 is 65 gigs just using the net in a totally legal manner.

So is it a problem with not enough bandwidth from the ISP out to the world, or are the caps in place to make money?

All this bullshit about 5% of users fucking over the other 95%, blah blah, total bullshit blah.

JUST BE HONEST, TWCRogComCharAT!!!

There is no more unlimited. Extreme used to be unlimited. Now it's 100gb... for 100 bux... and it's both way traffic.

pace yourself,

I have 60gb limit for Cogeco and I exceeded it only once, I usually cut it close now because I pace myself and check twice a month.

But I get 10megabit dl :p

You knew there was a cap and you decided to cut it close, stop complaining

So, I tried to drum up some sympathy for your plight. Your theft of IP pretty much made that impossible.

And I'm sure he is dl'ing on bittorrent (or the like). The loser OP is empowering the ISP's to come out and screw the rest of us over with bandwidth caps (even though we don't ILLEGALLY obtain shows/software/etc). You are just giving them more fodder to impose more caps. Get a fucking job and BUY software. How about we PAY the developers for their time, efforts, and creative talents? Stop bitching about doing EXACTLY what the ISP's are saying their reason for the caps are.

Every single cap has been imposed by an ISP that is trying to limit people like you that abuse the network. I hope you get a C&D letter and/or sued for IP theft. You are also the reason for all these DRM schemes. You are the reason programs like SecuROM, and StarForce exist. Stop illegally obtaining your content, grow the eff up, get a fucking job, and buy your content legally OP.

So people like me that can legitly download 65 gb's (see my earlier post in this thread) - what do you say to them?
