True, Feathers.

I got hit by that once, myself. But...many people don't even bother searching for keywords and even put "may be a repost" in the topic! Well...if you think it is...search and find out for sure!

BTW, sounds like Tabb needs some thicker skin   ;)

Its about time issues like this got brought up, ive only been a member for 8 months but ive noticed the general tone of the place has gone down a little, with loads of arseholes getting a kick out of making a seemingly innocuous question degenerate into an immature little kiddies slagging match. It doesnt matter how many posts you have or what rating youve achieved, I prefer "quality" over "quantity" anytime. And being a "Lifer" gains no respect in my eyes if that person is a dlck and cant answer quastions reasonably and with intelligence, give me a polite noob anyday.

It seems the more posts you have in this forum, the more arrogant you get, the noobs have as much right to post here as anyone, and as they get used to the place and start finding their way around there will doubtless be some reposts, BIG DEAL. Giving them shlt doesnt make them feel welcome, isnt helpful, and can only leave them with a lasting bad impression of the forum and its members, along with less of a willingness to post for fear of getting a thread hijacked by people who should know better. There, rant over, ive said my piece. lol. :D:beer:

No link, STFU! Simple as that.

No link = BAN :)

I think the use of repost without linking to the original thread, and providing it's within the first few posts (ie before a decent discussion has set it in the particular thread in question) could/should be a vacationable offence round here, at least it will get rid of some of them. Maybe a day for first/second time offenders, a week for multiple offenders. That should get the message across.

Just in case people didn't see it first time around :p

so what then if it's like this:

topic is made...
it's a repost...
i havent seen the first post(pages back)..
i read the repost (new to me) and others reply normally like they are the first to see it too..

how am I to know it's a repost? when it's the first one i see?
i don't lavish over posts pages back.. i dont go beyond the first page..

<shaking head in disbelief>

Before posting a new thread...at least do a SEARCH on the keywords that pertain to the subject.

IF you find an existing thread, bump that one, otherwise, go ahead and start a new one and say you searched (for those odd threads where someone creates a title like, "Hey! Check this out!")

It's not rocket science, folks.

There's a search textbox right at the top of the page.

Because the original poster should have follow what I just wrote.

If people took 3 seconds to search, we'd have much fewer reposts.

Take this thread for example. It's a repost of a repost of a....

We're talking about people searching who are posting threads.

As I said earlier, if repost is called (WITH A LINK) within a couple of posts, then that is OK. If a discussion has already started in this new thread, then don't worry about yelling repost, just shut the fvck up.

Post count != anything

i understand about the posting,

just when i read it sometimes what the diehards find as a repost aren't reposts to me and obviously others... so it's NEW to me...

besides I, DONT, READ, EVERY, FREAKIN', POST

so the odd repost doesn't bother me and others who don't scavange over every topic like a bum searchin' ashtrays for a butt to smoke..

Just to play devil's advocate, the repost police do serve a function... namely, its stupid to have multiple thread floating around about the same topic... It makes it harder to search for a specific thread if there are other clones of it, Its irritating when two clones are up at the top at the same time.

Repost trolls may piss you off, but if you people did a better job searching then it wouldn't be an issue.

The argue that repost police are just after post cound is bullsh!t. I think its the people who make the repost threads that are just trying to pad their count.

Yeah but the thing is that there are all kinds of visitors here, ranging from ones who are on 24/7 to ones who are on once a month or less....so not everybody has seen a particular topic...and while you can advise that people search first....not everybody will....and sometimes their search may miss stuff.

The only way to fix this is to make "repost" a banned word and to make any intentional variation a vacationable offense. Damn repost police preaching bandwidth when they take a repost thread and use it to nef out 2 whole pages in 3 minutes
rolleye.gif

Link to the original thread or do not post. Some of the people who post here actually have lives, you nerds...

Seriously, I agree completely with confused and vic.

The only time you should paste repost is before a discussion has begun in a thread, because 2 or more threads are currently holding the same discussion or because a year back a major discussion occured on this very subject.

Example 1: You see a post that you know has occured within the last week and the new one only has 2 or 3 minor replies. You direct people to the old link since the conversation was far more indepth and may save them some time.

Example 2: A hot topic appears and 4-5 posts quickly appear based on topic. In this scenario, usually the mods get involved and simply lock the extras or sticky the main one. This scenario really doesn't need any yelling repost, but if a mod hasn't gotten involved, you could try to direct others to the main thread and get everyone on the same page.

Example 3: You happen to know of this massive thread that tore said issue apart and rehashed everything. You suggest people at least read said post and link it.

Other than those instances, there is no reason to run around yelling repost besides post count and assholism.

And using the search is very easy to say and very hard to do. I useda use search a ton before subscriber. But when that got instituted, I lost my access to full body searches and can no longer find most of the things I look for. Usually I will search by a persons name who I know may have made the topic or posted in it. I've only posted like 3 topics in 2 years so the search thing doesn't really apply to me, I just get tired of hearing repost.

what about the pricks that yell repost after it has already been said

sometimes i go into a thread and see 10 ppl saying repost

tell me if that serves some function
