more posts = more bandwidth required = slower speeds for all.

one repost isnt bad, but when 10 people post the same thing and each one gets 15 replies each and 200 views each you start running into some bandwidth issues.

Didn't someone rant about this last week?
:p

The thing I hate about the repost trolls the most is the fact that most are new-blood to ATOT. They come in and post 5000 posts in a few weeks and act like they own the joint. Grrrrr.

Just keep thinking that. It is so trivial. If something is reposted and everyone has seen it, no one will reply. If people reply that havn't seen it, then those are people who didn't reply in the first post. The only added bandwidth is the people saying repost. Besides, this is offtopic and if bandwidth was truly needed they could just get rid of offtopic.

Stating repost is supposed to be something you do when there are 2 posts about the same topic on the same page. So that people can get directed into 1 main thread, letting the other thread die. It is not supposed to be something you state because you read a similar thread 3 weeks, 2 months, or 4 years ago.

If their are 10 reposts on the front page, you deserve to have a little heat thrown your way. Several of the same topic related posts will sink to the bottom if you dont post "Repost your idiot" and everyone follows along. I seriously doubt the forum server is going have that big of a bandwitdh problem from reposts.

Point? The only thing a search on repost does is show how fscking annoying that word is. I repeat, as long as people are enjoying, reading and replying to a thread, it does not matter whether you yourself have read the content before. You != world.

You are right, it doesn't matter if I have seen it, it matters if there has already been a discussion on it. If you want to bring back the fscking topic, bump it.

I stated this awhile back in a mod thread. I told them they should get rid of post counts all together! But they said it was supposedly a necessity for the FS/FT forum as it shows how trusted a member is. I think that is BS though because people can easily inflate their post count. I STILL think post counts should be removed. If more backed this idea up, I would be happy.

Why bump a 3 week old thread instead of creating a new one? It doesn't matter one way or another, if the 3 week old thread isn't being viewed or replied to anymore. Personally, if there is new input on a topic, I'd rather it be in a new thread and away from the mud that probably goes with an old thread. Most threads end up off topic. So putting a relevant post at the end of an off topic thread probably won't get many responses as people will never see it. Need I go on?

If a thread is the 18th thread about x in the past day, then sure, say (not yell) repost, along with a link to the original, or the one with the biggest discussion so far.

If it's something that was posted a week, 2 weeks, 6 months or 3 years ago, let it go. Some people aren't here 24/7, and haven't been here for 3 years.

I have been a member here and posting regularly for nearly 3 years, but it's only been the past couple of months i've ventured into OT, and therefore it's my first time seeing some of these things that have been "reposted" from 6 months

I think the use of repost without linking to the original thread, and providing it's within the first few posts (ie before a decent discussion has set it in the particular thread in question) could/should be a vacationable offence round here, at least it will get rid of some of them. Maybe a day for first/second time offenders, a week for multiple offenders. That should get the message across.

i agree that an extremely old thread need not be bumped, however, look at that stupid Matrix Ping Pong video. That must have been posted here nearly a dozen times in the last 2 weeks.

I thought it was a bad idea when they started tracking post counts. I knew people would try to establish a hierarchy based on it.

I say we should limit the use of the word "repost" all together. If something is a repost, the proper thing to do would be to post the link to the original thread and leave it at that, so that people can be directed to the other thread to see what's been discussed on the matter already. No link, STFU! Simple as that.

Because bumping the 3-week old thread keeps people from having to REPEAT themselves and offers up additional input on the thread.

Just bump the old thread.

So the repost police pushes the redundunt thread up to the top, prompting more people to discuss in the redundunt thread, by saying "repost" or linking to the "original/the first/the pioneering" thread". They could just let the thread sink by resisting their urge to say the word, but currently there's no medication to treat their ailment.

In principle I'd agree with this, but the non-subscriber search makes this virtually impossible, particularly where the thread title is "OMG LOOK AT THIS!" or something similarly non-descriptive, as many of the titles which try to use the element of surprise to get viewers are going to be.
