I despise how so much media out there is in real format. Too bad these idiots got a foothold with their "streaming video" nonsense which was needed back in the days of 14.4 connections.
I've made a short list of the reasons I hate Real with a passion:
  • when you first try to download it, it makes the free player incredibly difficult to find, trying to trick the consumer into purchasing their POS program
  • they think they're aol or netscape and includes a series of ads with the SEVEN MB download
  • they create links on the desktop, start menu, quicklaunch bar and on the system tray when you download their crap program
  • they add a useless real link to your IE browser and your search menu
  • they force you to "register" for FREAKING REALPLAYER.......
  • they generate a pop up ad EACH TIME you open/close the program
  • they try to make real the default player for ALL your media
  • their program is an enormous, inefficient, ugly piece of bloatware overall that seems to slow down my ENTIRE newly reformatted computer :|
[*]when you try to get rid of "startcenter" on your system tray it gives you some warning trying to make you not do it, as if your comp will get screwed up or something :|[/list]
lol.... i used "gofvckyourself@realnetworks.com" as my registration email and they told me it had already been registered :D
so i changed it to "gofvckyourselfhard" and got in :D

Edit: I forgot to mention that, yes, you can choose on install not to have some of these things happen but still, the fact that they work so hard to take over your computer is maddening. And, what's more, uneducated computer users don't know any better so they do all of this and pretty soon find that their computer is a lot slower and their desktop is all crowded.

Does anybody know any programs out there which I can use to watch/listen to .rm and .ram files and also to watch them within web browsers? I really want to uninstall this POS program.

Me too. I've made a concerted effort not to install it on any computer in at least a year. I just refuse to. Their format is among the lowest quality of the bunch, and their software takes up as much room as windows, and throws so much useless sh*t into the system that it borders on criminal.

"a friend of mine" uses the Realone player and "he" love it...you can customize it to not tie into your ie and no pop ups...I dont know how much it is if you buy it but "he" got it off downloads.com for the trial version and "he" thinks you guys know what to do from there

[*]they think they're aol or netscape and includes a series of ads with the SEVEN MB download
True - hate that

[*]they create links on the desktop, start menu, quicklaunch bar and on the system tray when you download their crap program
Not when you choose to bypass the option too. I've installed Real many times, you can skip the icon creation.

[*]they force you to "register" for FREAKING REALPLAYER.......
A lot of programs do.

[*]they try to make real the default player for ALL your media
Again you can choose NOT to.

Sounds to me like you just don't take the time to make sure it installs the way you want it. Don't just click "next" through the whole install or else you end up with a bunch of crap you don't want. It's hard to bitch about something they give you the option to not install (like the icons and such)

"he" should go outside and get some air and stop talking about "himself" in the wrong tense

i forgot to add the caveat that you can "choose" not to have those things happen. but the thing is 1) the uneducated computer user (like many people in my family) don't realize what they're doing and just agree with everything the stupid computer asks them to do and this makes their desktop crowded and slows down their computer IMMEASUREABLY.. and what's more, i'm pretty sure that these have become easily identifiable options on install only recently. in earlier incarnations these options were either hidden away somewhere or not available at all so those bastards more or less tried to hijack your comp.

It's always been in plain sight in the form of a checklist. Don't get me wrong, I wish Real would disappear as a format of streaming video, but it's just like every program; it tries plastering a million icons and a system tray icon and a start menu item and IE favorites (you get the picture). Hell, go install a simple prog like Winamp, if you click next through the whole thing, you'll end up with a Start menu group, desktop icon, quick launch icon, and a system tray icon - for one measly program!! It's all over the place, you can't single out one crappy program among a million others :p

but you have to admit some of the things they do are REAL slimy.... i mean, true a lot of programs make you "register" but you can skip that on most of them. these guys don't let you install until you do.... also, the most outrageous thing is the way they try to hide away the free player to trick you into purchasing it...

all of it smacks of slimy business... obviously these guys aren't making any money and are trying everything they can to create a viable product.

as for winamp, they also give you options as to whether you want all those icons everywhere but you can tell that they're solely trying to be HELPFUL. real is just trying to impose itself on you, methinks.

it's not like every program, it's always been worse than pretty much every other program in terms of taking over your computer if you do the default install. as mentioned, most people don't take the time to customize their installs because the lay computer person doesn't know they can or doesn't know how.

The Thing I really hate about Realplayer is, like Broohaha said, TRYING TO FIND THE FREE VERSION. They purposely make it extremely hard and annoying. Just thinking about that sh|tty player with its sh|tty sh|t sh|t makes me want to scream :frown:

Speaking of WORTHESS icons, anybody ever notice the Acrobat Reader one that shows up??? Why the hell would you want to open the program by itself when all it can do is open and read read-only documents!!?? The program registers the .pdf extension so all you need to do is click on the file you want to open and it will open the progam and document for you.... Yet somehow they feel it is necessary to include a desktop icon plus one and sometimes two start menu icons. Dumb.

And what a fcking adware, too! :)
