I bought a Cisco 678 DSL modem/router (yeah I know, it's not REALLY a router), from them back in may for ~$450 (which I still have yet to recieve my rebate for.) I used it for about two months, then I moved and cancelled my service, cuz DSL wasn't available yet at my new house. A few weeks ago, they ran some new lines by my house and told me that it was for DSL service. So I called up today to order new service, told them that I already had a modem. Well, turns out they don't use that modem anymore. I have to buy a new modem for another $450. Then I asked him if I hadn't moved, would I still need to buy a new modem, and he said no. Why the hell would it still work there, and not at my new house? Then I asked if they had a purchase protection or buy-back plan to make it so that I don't need to spend as much to get connected again, and again the answer was no. WTF gives? this sucks.

(waits to get burned by nik ;))

why would you spend $450 on a DSL modem/router? I can get both for under $100.

I needed multiple IP capabilites.

ok, call them up and order it but say you already have a modem, when they ask you what kind you have tell them you have the one you are supposed to have. It may work.

Wait a minute...

You have a 678? Or a 675?

There's a big difference.

And yes, they are really routers. Internal/external interfaces, virtual IPs, etc, they run an IOS derived CBOS & are quite capable.

LMK which one you have, & what type of line you have & I can tell you whether or not it will work.

The reason it might not work now is that all older Qwest lines are CAP lines and all new Qwest lines are DMT lines. 675's are CAP capable only, 678's are capable of both, but you have to flash the NVRAM between protocols.

Yup..and worst part about DMT is that it doesn't work as well as CAP without interleave. and interleave makes the ping to your first hop 60 ms! I don't know anyone with qwest dsl that gets under 120 ping on ANY gaming server.

The CAP to DMT conversion pissed off a lot of people, they'd try to upgrade their service, get re-provisioned in DMT, & then be forced to buy a new modem.

I believe they backed down on that at one point, & were re-provisioning people in CAP.

Actually, the Arascom's are apparently reasonably powerful though I've never dealt with one myself.

They're not supported in that way, but they can do most everything the Cisco can do.

At least my ex-Qwest buddies tell me that.

If it's a 678 it should work on either type of line.

Next you need to find out whether your line is CAP or DMT, and what mode your router is programmed for.
