(Rant mode on)

Arrrg.. I hate Quantum. They are the ONLY friggin "top tier" hard disk vendor that doesn't allow RMA creation online, so you HAVE to talk to their shmuck operators.

Have owned one Quantum Drive before this one, an HVD SCSI Atlas II drive... died two weeks into ownership. Sent back, was still noisy as hell, but I needed a drive... sold it to get out of HVD SCSI hell.

Ok, so I've got my happy one-of-the-fastest IDE hard disks on the market Fireball Plus LM 30GB drive. It's a little on the noisy side, so I sell it to get an IBM GXP. Well, I'm zeroing out the drive and halfway through it errors out, big red screen in the middle of the process. So I start an RMA, takes a week to get this because they want the drive first.. hrrrg.

Got the replacement drive in today... doesn't spin up. Get little green light on the drive, but not detected by IDE and doesn't have any real spin-up sound or gyroscopic feel when I power it down and pull the drive. So I try different cables, jumper settings, even a different jumper. Nogo. Tried both highpoint ata 100 and regular IDE controllers. Tried 2nd system, nogo. Tried good ol Asus BX board, nogo. Drive DOA.

Gotta call them again.... of course they don't want to believe their RMA drive is DOA...
have to go through the whole story, repeat parts. Emphasise I'm not a dumbass forgetting to power it on, have tried swapping everything possible and that the dang thing doesn't detect, so there's no way I can run their stupid diags... cause it wouldn't even detect the drive. So now they are sending a fedex pickup tomorrow to come get this POS drive.

Anyone else have this kinda crap with them? Thinking of registering QuantumBlows.com if this happens to other folks....

My old 13GB Quantum KA went bad (I suspect the maid dropped it), and my story was much luckier. I called Quantum, no wait time, they immediately issued an RMA. Then, as they didn't have replacements in stock, they mailed me a check for $107, which is twice the resale value of the disk. Perhaps it's a matter of luck.

Update:
FedEx pickup was screwed up. Tech gave them inaccurate time info, Fedex left no indication they ever even came by. Had to call and get it re-setup, finally got Fedex pickup done and drive shipped out last Thursday.

2/1/00 Drive #2 is back at Quantum. They say they shipped a drive back to me, but that they can't get me a tracking number for another 48 hours??? Dell manages to have them exactly when the drive is shipped, along with just about everyone else out there. Ugh.

Quantum is suck... I've had positive experiences with almost every hd manufacturer... I have a Quantum less than half a year, bad sectors galore. And the thing is the loudest out of all the drives I've ever had.

I used to LOVE them.. They were TOP NOTCH IDE drives... that was then...

I'm with you all.. :|

Quantum has gone DOWNHILL Big time over the last couple of years... I'm not into paying HUGE bux for a hard drive (IBM), so my alternative is Maxtor.

Maxtor hasn't always had the best reputation, but lately, the Diamondmax series have been really good. I like them and claim them to be the "Best bang" for the buck when it comes to storage...
Sure, IBM's are a bit faster, but the extra you pay in $$$ doesn't justify it to me.

I do hope that Quantum DOES bounce back and start making good drives again. not LOAD AS HELL ones :|

QUANTUM IS SUCK!!!!

So far, My Quantum KA 18 gigger is still hovering after 1.4 years. I got some bad sectors when I tried to convert a NTFS partition to Fat32, but Zero Fill fixed the problem.

BTW, My drive is on 24/7 (it never spins down, cause I hace RC5 running).
