My knee is busted up for some reason. I can't walk up stairs without it giving out on me and it just hurts walking around on it.

I was able to run/walk 4 miles the other day without any problems and I've been mountain biking all summer without any problems. I was shooting baskets last night for about half an hour without any problems.

Then BAM!. This morning I'm hobbling around like somebody that needs a knee replacement.

I've had this off and on for over a year now. Some days it's bad. Then it will be fine for months. Haven't taken the time to set up a Dr's appointment because by the time I get in for the visit it's feeling fine again.

On the bright side, at least it's a knee and not my back. My buddy woke up the other day and couldn't even stand because he had back spasms so bad. So I'll count my blessings that I don't have those.

Could be a piece of cartilage that sometimes interferes with movement, and sometimes doesn't.

Also, is it your knee cap that hurts? Or does it feel deeper within the knee? My mom has some strained ligaments that she had to get surgery on because her kneecap was shifting.

Listen ... I don't want to be alarmist ... but my brother was the most active guy I knew and he had phantom knee pains for a long time. By the time it got really bad, and he went to the doctor, and they finally got around to CAT/MRI scans it was too late. He had a rare form of bone cancer in his left thigh that was very aggressive. He passed away 6 months after the diagnosis. :(

Please, please, please get your ass to the doctor now just to rule something like that out. Hopefully it is just an old torn ligament or something.

Good luck.

GAH! That's not cool. As for what hurts, best I can describe is that it starts under my knee cap and then wraps around the outside of my knee and then around behind it. Seems like a classic ACL/LCL sprain :\

Yeah, that definately sounds like some sort of ligament damage to me. And, of course, I'm a doctor. Wait...
