and it has nothing to do with politics. Was supposed to do a great one night backpacking trip at a NY State park not far from the city. So very convenient. Done it before twice and it's fantastic - not too strenuous but with great views, water source nearby, lots of places to pitch a tent near a lean-to shelter, and rings to build fires. All set to go this Friday until my buddy googles it and sees that camping there, and at some other places in the park, has been suspended by the park due to lots of bear traffic at these camping spots. Why? Because people suck. They leave trash behind, usually with remnants of food in it. They don't store their food properly when not in use while camping. And probably some of the most idiotic even try to feed the bears. Now the bears associate that area with food and they have no fear of humans anymore. Nobody's been hurt but saw multiple people post their gear got trashed as they watched a bear tear it apart looking for their food. Now these bears may be at risk of being put down too!

Spoke to my friend who lives in Denver and he said it's getting bad there too. They go car camping and hiking regularly, and see litter strewn about. Lately it's been a lot of masks. Masks, how the hell is a lightweight mask too inconvenient to put in your pocket and take back out with you? Holy shit people you suck!

No trace left behind. You carry it in, you carry it out. This is routine stuff and basic decency. Ugh.

Yup, not packing out your trash out should be punishable by feeding you to the bears.

Nuts. Wtf people! I do see discarded facemasks here and there when walking my dog in a somewhat Urban area. So far on day hikes in northern NJ I haven't seen litter on the trails, just at some places where people like to hike up to with beers and then party.

I think it's just a subset of lazy Americans. I noticed the same thing when I was in St. Thomas and the cruisers would come and completely overrun the beaches. Thankfully they would only go for like 2 hours before they were herded out of there. But they never forgot to leave all their trash behind.

On the flip side if you went to other beaches where cruisers didn't go or on days they weren't around, the people who went to the beaches wouldn't leave any trash around.

When I've been to many other Caribbean islands I don't see this at all, especially the more uppity ones like Grand Cayman.

But St. Thomas is so easy for lazy Americans to get to via cruises that they can overrun beaches there.

It's not a "people" problem. It's a culture problem. People just aren't brought up correctly to understand the concept that when you leave your shit laying around it effects other people. But then they don't even care if they are a burden to other people because they just say "Not my problem"

One of the reasons I fucking loved Japan and the culture they have. Very respectful of other people, their time, and their general public image. ZERO trash on the streets. ZERO. Zilch. None. When you got off the public transit subways there wasn't a HUGE BUMRUSH to the escalators either - everyone respectfully gets in a single-file line and they all keep right so that anyone in a hurry can walk up on the left.

I hate 2020, and also people who litter and feed the bears and litter.
I also hate those farking people who dont put the cart in the car corrals and and leave them to smash into other peoples cars. I secretly want to put them to death, even though it is a bit of an overreaction.

Human overpopulation is not only detrimental to nature, it reduces the quality of life for our own species. Save the planet, don't breed.

My fav is people at the dog park where I volunteer, fixated on their phones, with their back to their dog taking a dump.

If I can pair the owner with their dog, I walk over and tell them their dog just took a dump they need to clean up, and usually have to tell them where it is. I've also seen people 'pretend' not to see their dog take a dump.

yogi bear is the real cause of this problem

it is him, and not the people, who ultimately deserves your hatred

And then they dump their half-full over-foamed and sugared coffee right onto the parking lot as they leave. The sticky residue they've spewed all over the pavement really gives that "shit-hole" vibe to the premises.

It's the worst at Costco around here with the carts, although I never shop at Walmart or Target so who knows what's going on at those places.

There is a trailhead a couple of miles from my house - I've hiked about 6.5 miles of it RT every Wed night for the past several years. Its a pretty good trail, but always had tons of trash lying around - which simply infuriated me. A couple of years ago I decided to make a concerted effort to clean it up and keep it cleaned up. It requires an every week effort.

So 2 takeaways:
1. assholes are going to be assholes
2. it takes people who are willing to get involved, get dirty, & do the work to undo the damage done by assholes

The other day I saw someone throw garbage out of the window of their car on the highway. Why is this still happening? I wish there was a magic button where you can give people a flat tire at the next convenience.

I've noticed within the last year since COVID has graced our lands, that people stopped going out camping, hiking, etc. as much. So the animals are going, wtf, those crappy humans have stopped coming out. Now we can go back to our old stomping grounds. And to a certain extent they have.
So I think it's bit of that and humans are naturally trashy in general. I saw a picture of a bear yesterday at a park somewhere in NY actually sitting on a picnic table like a human would eating trash left over from some dumb asses.
