I hate people who support real media!!

it pisses me off! like everyone has real player installed on their machines (not even alternative, the actual spyware bloatware crap). and they all claim that oooo the new "RealVideo 10 Variable bitrate format" is FAR superior to divx and you can "Reduce a full dvdrip to under 300 mb while maintaining 90-95% dvd quality" which i know is complete b.s.

what can i say to these guys to make them realize how stupid their thought process is?

somethign more than "real sucks"

isnt mkv and wmv9 based encoding way better than divx anyway? just a thought. and btw i loathe stupid real/quicktime too :|

In the 600-1k video bitrate range divx looks better than any other codec imo. Go below that and wmv's blurring helps it to look better than divx's "boxes", but it looks like crap either way so it's a moot point. Above that it'll look good regardless. And real & qt suck donkey cojones.

strange, the messageboard where i get most of my stuff vastly prefers wmv over divx/xvid of any kind. you seem to know a great deal more than i do, but is there a chance there are different wmv standards? the one i am talking about is wmv9 based, if there happens to be a different kind. well you cant deny wmv-hd is the most gorgeous looking codec out there, bar none 🙂

i never had a problem with qt...
real otoh...hasnt been on any systems i own in 4 years at least.
i dont think qt is any better than real time. the reason we look down upon these is they dont look quite as good as other options yet they attempt to force proprietary POS player on you although there are ways to get around it (i.e. real/qt alternative projects)

I'll grant that I'm not super-familiar with wmv, and wasn't aware of a new version of it or one for HDTV. Just basing it on the wmvs I've seen, mostly video clips and such posted here, using vdub to check on their bitrate. I don't like that it supports copyright protection though; while I'm behind the idea, in practice copy protection punishes people who actually purchase protected material while those who don't freely go around it. Also, it's purely opinion; you might well see the same things I think divx looks better in and say wmv looks better.

Real sucks, but the next QT codec should be good since it will be H.264 based. Nero is also coming out with an H.264 codec that should be very solid. H.264 is better than anything out there right now, but it requires a lot of processing power. Last I heard, you can expect to need ~10x the processing power to decode an equal-quality video that takes 50% of the space of MPEG-4.

FWIW WMVHD is just WMV9 Pro combined with WMA9 Pro. It is arguably the best codec available right now.

Perhaps somebody can help me here. I won't put 'Real' on my system. but there is a .ram file I would like to open. Is there an alternate way to do so?

oh well gurck, i just happened to watch tons of *.avi / *.wmv files and in my experience *.mkv or *.avi with wmv9 encoding are disticntly better in picture quality, and most prefer wmv files to be uploaded and are reluctant to download the divx/xvid versions. the files being uploaded here at ATOT are just small clips, not full blown tv/dvd conversions; codecs cant help if source is craptastic to begin with 🙂

Have any windows updates included wmv9? I update regularly but generally don't pay attention. I back up my DVDs to CD and would like to give it a try.

Edit: nevermind, found it.

IIRC windows update before SP2 hit did have wmv9 codecs. otherwise you could look for wmfdist.exe which is supposed to have all you need for wmv9. i am just a leecher, i dont know how you would go about encoding it yourself 🙂

you do realize that OMG and MKV are nothing but container files that hold the divx/xvid encoded video along with the seperate sound tracks and sub titles
