I hate packing...

Moving from a house with a basement and finished attic to a 2br apt 1.5 hours away. Already had a huge yard sale, made 8 trips to goodwill and 5 to the dump, and the basement STILL looks full. Main floor and upstairs are nearly all packed/empty. We just have so much shit, and some of it is still in boxes from our last move.

I'm seriously considering getting rid of a bunch of things I never thought I would, lots of old computer hardware, EVERYTHING from my childhood (when the hell will I ever want/need that 7th grade yearbook??) my wife thought I was crazy when I threw away every sock I had but 12 pair of black and 5 pair of white. I'm thinking of goodwilling all but like 5 t-shirts as well. WTF are we doing with like 50 t-shirts, 10 pairs of shoes each, 9 pairs of shorts, etc? Anyone else just tossed out 90% of their shit before?

EDIT: Also, waiting for the house to sell in this market will be loads of fun, nothing like paying mortgage on a house you aren't living in AND rent...

New job, no $ in the bank, bankruptcy on our record. Figured living in an apt for a year would give us the opportunity to save up a downpayment on a new house in the new city

we try to go through everything every year or so to keep the clutter down. but man i hate to see the storage part of the basement.

and why not rent a house? I'm sure you could have found one for a reasonable rate. I moved farther last year (600mi.) and my rent is about the same as my payment was. and i have more privacy than an apt.

my credit is shot and i was able to find a house.

I hate the entire experience. I had enough of moving when I was younger, in the 15 years I lived in Los Angeles in my 20s and early 30s I moved at least 13 times that I can remember.

We've been contemplating the same thing. I am not that far from retirement, and we will likely move to our condo in Vancouver when I am done working. The challenge will be what to move from our 3,600 ft2 house that is crammed with furniture, books, computers etc. to a 1,000 ft2 condo.

We will definitely have to "simplify" our lives, but I think I can part with most of my possessions without pain.

when my dad and his wife retired they went from a 3 bedroom 3500ft (with finished basement) house down to a 900 ft 3 bedroom house.

while helping them clean out the basement (they had a bar down there) i found like 60 un-opened bottles of alcohol. it was fricken amazing.

the amount of junk they had was overwelming. we filled up a dumpster 3 times with junk.

of course i took a couple truck loads of stuff home (all the alcohol heh).

now they live pretty basic.

Heh, there's this "state of mind threshold" I've reached. Hard to explain, but something clicked in my head such that as I am reaching to put something in the keep pile my brain says "seriously? SERIOUSLY???" and it ends up in the trash/goodwill pile. I mean stuff like board games and, old computer hardware, clothes that haven't fit in 4 years 'just in case', books, and the sheer number of redundant things I have.

oh yeah it was a eye opener for me. when me and my wife moved from the farm (3200 sqft 5 bedrooms) to a 3 bedroom 2ksqft place we got a dumpster. though we only filled it once.

we did have one hell of a bonfire. we burned up 3 couches, 2 loveseats, and a few recliners we had.

i was amazed how fast they went up and how much smoke they put out!

From the time it was approved to actual was about 2 weeks. company paid for a house hunting trip of 3 days and for the move.

Plus i used a property management company to arrange home to see that they handled.

sheesh, go go bad knees AND a bad back... makes it difficult to lift properly. We're moving Saturday and I had to stop doing stuff today and hit the chiropractor for some good PT/massage. Going to go back for more tomorrow, hopefully that means by Saturday I'll be able to move the furniture in and out of the U-Haul.

Also, I do agree that tossing your junk out once a year is a good idea.

I am basically doing the same thing.

My father passed away in July and the house is up for sale. I have an apt now and packing up my stuff while going through my dad's stuff. There is so much crap its unreal.

I have access to 3 dumpsters and I am using a lot of gas. I am also working full time. I am so tired its unbelievable.

My saying is "the more room you have. the more crap you accumulate."

I am saving up to eventually buy a house or a condo apt.
