well, not really... except that they make me spend too much money there... I just bought 2 western digital 120gb/8mb buffer 7200rpm drives... I'm going to set them up in raid0 on my main computer, giving me (with the current 60gb i've got)...

300gb of storage.

am I ill? 😕
 
Maybe it's just me, but I don't really see the need for so much storage. I don't download illegal mp3s (I listen to internet radio most of the time - I think it's better), I'm not really into pr0n (possibly b/c i still live at home and my parents would freak if they saw any), and I even though I have WinXP and Photoshop 5.0, I don't use more than 4-5 GB of space on my 80GB drive right now.

I'm not saying that your RAID setup isn't cool (it's really impressive), but WHAT are you going to use it for??

Well, I'm never going to remove any games from my computer ever again... I download television episodes of shows like the simpsons and family guy (the good quality ones come in at about 200mb each). I rip all my CDs to mp3 at 192kbps...

basically, storage of media.

 
I have 160GB of storage overall, and i've used up about 130GB. Most of my files are movies, simpsons episodes, south park episodes, and custom mixed .wav files (about 30GB).

Yeah, i suppose i could burn all my episodes and movies, but it's just not as convenient sorting through 100's of CD's just to find that one simpsons episode you wanted to see.

Edit: I shouldn't be shocked, I just added up the storage on my three computers and I have 290GB total. This from too many deals I couldn't pass up.
 
I wish I had (2) 120gb hds 🙁 It would defintely help the cooling/space in my case

I have:
(2) 40 gb 7200 RPM
(1) 60 gb 5400 RPM
(2) 80 gb 7200 RPM
-------------------------
300 gb

and I am low on space. I had to take out my floppy drive and dvd-rom to fit all of my harddrives. So I really have to get another case. Oh, mp3's and movies fill my harddrives, current playlist is over 40 days long😀

So what are you going to do for backing up that data? Or do you not care? 300GB is a lot of CDR's to burn.

Right now, I've got about 80+GB of drives between my and my wifes PC. I recently bought and 80GB drive and stuck it in my wifes PC to serve as a mirror of the important data on MY pc. I also back her data from her main drive onto it. Not the most fault tolerant solution but from a convenience perspective it's easy and also fairly safe. Basically, her PC would have to get a surge (lightning or blown power supply) and destroy both of her drives to loose SOME data. (Important stuff still also gets backed up to CDR or my PC).




 
it's only about 470 cds to burn... give or take.
anyways, I plan on getting a dvd writer one of these days... that'll knock down the total number of burns I have to do. a lot of the stuff I'm going to put on them is already backed up anyways, but thanks for the logical concern 🙂
 
Or, should have just gotten those new 200gb WD drives.. thrown them in raid0, kablamo!

I'm still waiting for the day where I can have 1 terrabyte. Is that too much to ask? 😉
 
I would never use RAID-0 with that much storage. RAID-1 only for me. Call me paranoid but running 1 120 gig drive with all my data on it is scary enough, doubling the chances for a failure is insane! :Q

Just wait until you move off to college and have high speed internet and no money... then you will know what you use that kind of space for...

1 80 gig 5400 maxtor (good for recording the simpsons)

I have 4 WD 1000JB 100 GB drives in RAID-0. I use it for video editing (a hobby). It comes in pretty useful if I've got a few projects going at once. I would not use RAID-0 for any long term storage, but for short term storage of massive video files I'm working on it's great... and a hell of a lot faster than a bunch of single drives.

I had that much space since last year.

 
I have 4 120's in a raid 5 array, but it is for a web server not regular storage. This computer has a 60, with a soon to be coming 80 gig to be addded. I am running out of space between newsgroups and movie editing.
