I missed that part. I got tired of the babyish whining in the first post. :)

Look into wireless. Its not cheap, but it will work. Maybe a cellular connection. Its not fast or cheap, but it will work (if there are any left...).

And here is a post I made in a simliar thread (one that I was surprised at the lack of whining once the situation was explained to the user :D). It doesnt deal with exactly the same problem, but its close enough that some of it will apply:

I can think of several solutions to your "problem."

1. Utilize the student discount effect. There should be plenty of software and whatnot in the campus stores available at a special student rate, take advantage of this.

2. DSL/Cable/Dialup. Get your own unfettered internet connection and do as your ISP allows you.

3. Get a server co-located somewhere. You can then ssh/remote desktop/vnc into that machine, download everything to that machine and use scp/ftp to get the files off of that machine. Chances are FTP and scp are not limited to the degree most file sharing programs are. This also gives you experience in setting up a server, keeping it secure, and you will understand how expensive bandwidth really is.

4. Get together with the people in your dorm. Work on setting up a "file sharing system" there. Even open network shares would get the job done. Everyone can create an open network share on their machine, store their goodz there and allow people to mooch. Localnet bandwidth is much cheaper than Internet. Plus, one of the things higher education is supposed to be good for (but I never found this to be really true) is that it gives you the chance to experience different cultures and different points of view. Think about the variety of people on your floor in the dorm. There are probably the mix of pop, hip-hop, metal, and maybe even some techno listeners on your floor alone. Granted, most of the people there probably listen to the same music as the rest of the people, but you should be able to find one or two different people with different tastes willing to participate.

5. Write a letter to the big wigs informing them of the problem, a solution to the problem, and the benefits to the school and students if your solution was to be put in place. A fairly professional letter, describing how this lack of p2p ability hurts the education of the students, the budget of the school, and the usability of the network could go a long way. Make sure to mention how the extra bandwidth being used would not affect the budget to a significant degree and could make administration of the network easier. If you find ways to make that true, let the rest of us know With this solution, you dont look like a greedy little kid, and as a benefit to you and your parents, it would be tough for them to justify kicking you out.

6. Participate in things not involving a computer, kazaa, and a box of kleenex.

These solutions are all valid and possible. None of them quite gives you the ease and simplicity of kazaa and a big pipe, but they will all solve the problem. #4 would be what I would look into, although the security implications are a concern.

Good luck.

its funny how schools can advertise that they have "high speed internet access" in their dorms when they hook up crap like this. Its actually cheaper for them to do this than to have a dial up server with 50 phone lines attached to it providing 56k.

UCSD has a pretty decent internet connection. It really fluctuates though, I was actually hittin 5.85 MB's a second from several servers, but then on others i can get around 100-500k or even lower.

So, you think that your internet connection fluxuates because one server gives you kick-ass speed and another gives you semi-decent speed?

Hmm...

so you're saying that each building (East Lothian, West Lothian, A&I, and the new suite/dorms) each have only ONE external ip? Are you sure about this? When I was in West Lothian in the fall of 1998, the only dorm that had ethernet was East Lothian, and all IP addresses were assigned statically. When I moved into A&I in the fall of 1999, they were supposed to have ethernet, but were lagging. Finally, winter quarter 2000 all the dorms had ethernet, and all the IP addresses were assigned dynamically (DHCP). Back then I only had routing problems and I'd ping 100 to Quake servers on the west coast. From what I remember asking resnet, we had a 100mb line from campus shared with all 3 dorms, and everybody had their own IP. Last year, one of my friends moved into East Lothian, and about two weeks into fall qtr, he said that resnet shut off the connection for a week or two because they reached their quota for some set time period or something.

I never have understood why collages don't adopt the capping policy, 1mbit down, 256up, thats enough for most users, if they want more, they should pay more, none of this port blocking stuff, thats crap, just limit usage, and set weekly limits that are resonable for student research with an allocated amount of time for "fun" and don't just limit the dorms eather, limit computer labs, library's ect...if studies need more speed in classroom or labs for research then ajust the limits, its not that complicated.

What does lag have to do with ethernet?

nik

he meant that they were lagging behind schedule of setting the ethernet up.

My school is the same, though not quite as bad. HTTP stuff is usually really fast, but stuff like kazaa is completely blocked. Thankfully there's a little program called HTTP-Tunnel which lets you route traffic from almost any program through port 80 :) The free service is limited to 1.5KB/sec per connection, but you can subscribe for $4.99/month and get 1.5Mbps bandwidth. Works great. link

My connection is BS too.. heres my thread on it.. i can pull a max 2k/sec.. most of the time 1k/sec... i disabled all pictures online and it still slow..they have blocked Kazaa.. and have a single T-1 line for like 800 kids... they also have another T-1 line that is used for acemdic people... they shut down that line at 5 and it just sits there the rest of time... i have been on a personal mission to get this fixed and am gonna probally gonna gather some students and discuss what can be done..

They have also banned cable modems. Well i thought i maybe could get around this, and went out and bought one anyway, only to be shut down by the cable company. The ban on cable modems is BS, they just dont us connection to the states main server that is secretly in one of the dorms basements. I am pretty sure this is illegal, but its hard to get anything to change. I even posted on the schools message boards and have gotten lots of replies.. all negative against how slow it is. All i want is my cable modem back and i will be happy.

on a side note, my friend told me that there are alotta hotties at UCR now :p He helped some people move into the dorms and said he noticed way more hot chicks than last year. When I went there, they were practically nonexistant :p So look at this as a sign- step away from the computer, go outside, and make some new friends :) btw which dorm do you live in?

i'm in e.lo.

look at this BS:
http://files.joako.com/bullshit.png
both files are on the same server, and are 100% identical in content
the only difference is one is .mp3, the other is .mp3 renamed to .jpg
