I started going to a new mechanic because he seemed trustworthy.

Well, a few weeks ago I skid on some black ice (at ~5mph) and my front right wheel hit the curb. The car could barely get up to 15mph without vibrating horribly, so rather than take it to that "trustworthy" mechanic I took it to my local auto shop. They told me it was just a bent rim and that I needed an alignment. I bought a new rim and had it swapped on, called my mechanic and asked how much they charged for alignment - they told me their machine was broken.

Well just to be on the safe side and make sure everything else was good I took it there anyway and had them put it on a lift. They pointed at the bent(?) LCA and told me that was gone, and that they didn't know what else was broken and suggested that I just replace the whole right side suspension to the tune of $800 ($600 parts, $200 labor). I told them I would buy the parts and bring it in (got it much cheaper). So they put it on (supposedly) and tell me the car's ready, I owe them $300 for labor. Upon asking why $300 when they told me $200 before, they told me they did an alignment for me (i thought the machine was broken?) and they had "more work than anticipated" thus the extra $40. I thought whatever, this guy's an ass but I need my car.

I start driving it home and notice that that on one occasion that day when I hit the brakes my foot just fell to the floor and the brakes literally failed (felt like the weak rears were the only ones that were working). The brakes were fine for the rest of the day (though I didn't drive it much). The brakes failed on me again two days later and I almost hit a guy, so this definitely isn't a fluke and needs to be looked at. Plus, the car pulls to the right when i'm driving slow and pulls to the left when i'm driving on the highway. I dropped it off last Wednesday (it's been about ~3 weeks now since i've actually used my car).

Well I call up yesterday morning, Friday, the owner "isn't there" but apparently my car hasn't even been looked at. They promise it'd be done later that evening. Didn't call them up yesterday but asked for the owner again this morning. The owner doesn't seem to want to speak to me so the mechanic on the phone has to relay messages to/from him. Apparently, their alignment machine is broken (seriously, which is it?) and the guy who's supposed to come in and fix it won't be here till next week. I asked for a refund for the alignment at least so I could get it done at the dealer and have my brakes looked at (it'd cost more but at least my car would work). Owner relayed message through mechanic that no, I could not have a refund because it was a "package deal" ... wtf?

So I dumped over $500 on my car and I've got nothing to show for it. Argh. I don't want to be an ass because I still need them to fix the damn work, but I got so ripped off.

Oh, and when I picked up the car the first time they claimed I needed my hoses, spark plugs, air filter, etc replaced. My ass, the air filter and plugs were replaced just a few weeks before I had this "accident." @Q#%@#$%#@$%@#$%

You paid with a Credit Card right? Call them up and dispute the charge.

Charged you more than they agreed upon and quoted you the first time.
Charged you for work not performed

Should be a no brainer. Then go get the car and take it somewhere else. Ask friends for recommendations so you don't have this happen again.

Good Luck.

Wait so he tried to convince you you needed stuff that you didn't need and you are saying he 'seemed trustworthy'? You owned yourself.

End of story.

Ah, I forgot to mention that part. No, I actually paid cash - they claimed their "machine" was broken and asked me to bring cash in. So yeah, I screwed myself over right there...I just wanted my car back already. I didn't expect all these problems.

As RyanSengara would so eloquently put it, that's where I "owned myself."

A few years back I had a 1990 Grand Am that was leaking oil. Took it into a place and they said "no problem, we'll have it fixed tomorrow."

The next day I pay them $100 and drive home. Once I got home I notice it's still leaking oil. I bring it in again and pay another $130 (which, being 19 at the time, didn't have the guts to dispute with him). Two days later it's leaking oil again. I take the car to my uncle and he finds the leak and sees all this other place did was spray some silicon sealant around the area of the leak.

Essentially I paid them $230 to put my car on a lift and spray some stuff where they thought the leak was.

Leave the owner this message: I'm calling my attorney next time he doesn't pick up. Thanks

In the meantime, get your car look at by the dealer or whoever to get it to work. GO to small claim court and make them pay.

He said rather than taking it to the trustworthy mechanic, he went to a local shop instead.

The one time I had to take my car in, they fixed the problem, and didn't tell me anything else was wrong with the car, and then even fixed my door lock for free.
I guess I was just lucky, but then again my local garage was the same place where Haynes motor manuals are done :)

i miss mine. i havent had a problem in a while, but my dad was friends with the guy and he never ripped us off. sometimes he took an extra day to get to something is all, but he always did it right the first time, and if he couldnt, he recommended someone that he used. (there were a few things, being that he preferred the repo business, he didnt like to spend time on unless it was for himself or a family member like transmission and timing chain work on some things)

great guy, nice to have a mechanic like that. sucks for the op :/

Heh, sounds like the troubles my uncle's had with mechanics. He finally just built a nice little garage, got the service manual, and bought all kinds of equipment for working on it. Anything he thinks he can do, he does himself. Sucks that you can't trust people to do just what needs to be done, and not try to rip off every customer. It's like everyone going into the doctor for a sore throat, and every one of them is told, "Oh, you'll need surgery for that," then they just put you under and scratch your throat with a tongue depressor. "You'll be a bit sore for a few days from the surgery, but it'll go away. That'll be $30K please."

Better Business Bureau..... In addition, show up and demand to speak to the owner. Get a refund if need be.....it doesn't look like they know what they're doing.
