this cat is really nice though! just a little bit shy

speaking of which, i finally DID remember something about them coming over. one friend said their cat hid under my couch and when he mentioned that, i remembered reaching under the couch and trying to get him out while my friends were laughing.

so maybe more memories will come back to me in time

yeah i always go to the doctor in june or july, gonna bring it up when i go there. in the past when i have mentioned memory problems she just shrugged it off and was like "you had 1/2 your short term memory removed, you'll have that."

Memory loss is freeing in it's own way. You don't hate because hate is dislike compounded and things don't pile up on you.
Other people's stories always seem fresh, although sometimes they all feel like I heard it before. (Same with TV, movies and books)

interesting, i have always been able to deal with hard-to-handle people... it makes sense that not remembering all the rotten things they have done helps with that :biggrin:

yeah that happens when i talk to my grandpa! he tells the same stories of his younger days but i can never remember how they go, so he always keeps my attention.

ohhh i see

i had seizures for about 10 years. it was all happening when i was in high school/college, and i could only drive about 1 year during that whole time. i did have 1 seizure while driving and crashed into a car (luckily at low speed, nobody hurt). so i tried pretty much every medicine on the market to control them, but none of them worked for more than 6 months or so.

i finally got sick of all the medicine side effects, went to a new doc, she said that i might be able to get surgery. they did some tests, found that surgery had a %60 chance of stopping the seizures, so i gave it a go. they took out almost a whole temporal lobe and a hippocampus (where the seizures originated from due to scarring from a high fever as a kid).

that fixed enough of the problem that the medicine works now, so i don't have any seizures and i can drive again.

but the downside is memory loss. since temporal lobe does word memory among other things, i forget a lot of words while talking. and since the hippocampus converts short term memories to long term memories, many little things that happen to me during the day just get forgotten, because they don't make it to long term memory.

usually it's little stuff that i forget, like something people tell me in less than a minute. that's what is weird about the cat thing... i have never lost something that took a few hours instead of a few minutes.

The memory retention is not helped at all by the medications we have to take, but it's better than having seizures. I, and I am sure Brian, have learned to write things down a LOT. In some ways, it is amazing what we are able to still do all things considered, but in other ways it is just enough to allow one to get pretty down from time to time for what we can't (or can't do as well as we would like).

To both you and the OP:

Do you take copious amounts of fish oil or another EPA and DHA supplement? I don't know how critical it is in adulthood, but those fatty acids are building blocks of neurons (along with other cells, and they hold influence over other physiological attributes). Proper dosage is critical for youth neural growth to occur correctly, or else you can get various cognitive defects or mental health concerns due to what is essentially a nutritionally starved brain. Proper supplementation has been shown to help reverse some of this and help bring the brain into proper condition.

Again, I can't say if it's going to be important for any neurogenesis in adulthood, but it feels like the right hunch to say that it certainly can help. 1 or 2 grams of fish oil is better for neural/mental health than the smaller doses found in products that promote cardiovascular health as the main benefit of supplementation.

i have not tried fish oil - only fish i eat is tuna once or twice a week. i'll give it a look see.
