The thing that saddens me about Jeopardy is that you have people like Ken Jennings who hang out there for YEARS ON END and earn about $1million. This means that for all that time, they were missing work, living in a hotel room, eating out, etc. And then you have people who go on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, answer much easier questions for 10 minutes and get a million dollars. Morons get fast money, smart people going on the only respectable game show earn pocketchange.

Morons like watching other morons struggle with questions they can understand, they don't like watching a genius answer questions they will never be able to understand. Thus you have 99% of the population for the moronic shows, and 1% for the hard ones. 99 > 1, so that one will concern more money.

Doesn't the US have a version of University Challenge too? The UK version of that show has reasonably hard questions too once in a while.

Few examples here:

(Googled it, it's called 'College Bowl' in the US)

It's strategy. If there's a category that you are very strong in, you want to make sure you get a crack at all the questions in that category before time runs out.

What are you talking about? Ken Jennings appeared on 75 regular episodes and 3 in the Ultimate Tournament Of Champions. They film multiple episodes of Jeopardy every day. He didn't spend more than a month total recording his run on Jeopardy. He neither played nor filmed for years on end.

The Millionaire Show is a gimmick. Jeopardy has been running since 1964. Millionaire lasted a very short time in prime time, and the questions on Millionaire are VERY hard once you get into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The chances of winning more than $64k on Millionaire are VERY slim.

Jeopardy is more fascinating now than ever. David Madden has introduced strategies that few people have ever considered.

Oh and to answer the question, you want to keep the questions coming. There's a time limit. Lost questions are lost scoring opportunities. There's no shame in cutting Alex's banter. Time is money.

The funny thing about Millionaire, is the higher up questions are sometimes easier for me... they tend to have Pop Culture type questions in the middle... and I don't know much in that respect. Usually when they get higher up they ask the technical science and possibly fine arts questions and I excel in answering those. :)

If I were ever to have gone on that show, I would have all my phone in friends be people like your average blond teenager, who know only about pop culture and nothing else. :p

Honestly, I don't like jeopardy because it makes me feel dumb. I mean, what the hell do I know about 17th century english poetry? I'll tell you what, its from the 17th century and its english. Or European monarchies? I'd never do well on that show, 90% of the time when I know an answer I can't call it up fast enough to be the first on the buzzer.

It is pretty nice when they throw up a catagory about computers or something and all the contestants just blank on it while I'm shouting the answers. But thats few and far between. Its usually "Obscure Cricket Rules" "Roman Aristocrat Attire" "Eastern European Literature" "Incestuous Royal Unions" "Boring Fables" and then maybe one catagory I have a chance in hell at.

The show just isn't the same since Trebek shaved his moustash though.

Bring back the moustash Trebek!

Colors that end in "Urple" for $500 Alex
"This Color Ends in "urple""
What is Light Urple?"

Sean Connery: What is the difference between a mallard and a goose?
Alex: I don't know.
Sean Connery: One is a duck with a cold...I forget the rest but your mother is a whore.

Personally, I find the idiots at Wheel of Fortune who still buy vowels even though they know the answer already much more amusing.
