Get them surgically fixed. I had a bad set that hurt all the time and recently had a podiatrist fix them.

They spray on a local anesthetic. Then they inject a 50/50 mix of lanacain and marcaine to further dullen it. Then they take what looks like a wire cutter and snip off the bad section of toe. They twist it and pull it out by the root. then they apply some acid in the corner to kill the toenail root of the side that gets infected. if you suffered half as much as I did I would advise you to get this done.

I had the same problem. Years of soccer continually caused my toe-nails to become in-grown. Finally I had the aicd treatment and no problem since then. On a side note, if I remember correctly, when they inject the acid into your toe, you can feel the acid climb all the way up your leg into your body. It sounds bad, but it really just feels like water is getting poured down ( or I guess up) your leg.

I have the same problem on both of my toes on both sides of the nail (however the right toe inside is the most often). One time it got so bad I had to get it removed at the doctor. Having him shoot novacaine into your big toe with a huge needle didn't feel too great, but once the nail was removed....ahhh. Anyway now I have to pack cotton under the edges, this really keeps the sides of the nails from being able to grow to far down into the nail bed. Man, those were some painful times.

as far as surgery goes:

a. How much does it generally cost?

b. Does insurance generally cover the cost?

Here's a way to fix it yourself without surgery and BEFORE you have to go digging.

When you notice it starting, cut a "V" notch in the middle of the top-edge of the nail. Then just let it grow out.

Worked every time for me.
