I Hate IE 5.5

It feels jerky, pauses and the lack of the hour glass when you click a link bugs the crap out of me. It is like you missed your click. Also, on certain sites like here, when you scroll down the page with the wheel, it is jerky.

I went back to 5.01. Print preview is nice, but not worth keeping IE 5.5 for.

Also, can someone with 5.01 confirm this is 5.01 from the help, about menu - 5.00.3105.0106

I want to make sure I restored it correctly.

Thanks,

LJ

Hi LJ,

I found 5.5 beta buggy but thought things would be fixed by the official release. Nope. I am still using 5.5 but like you I may return to 5.01. The MS product update page displays these verion numbers:

"If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01 SP1, the version number will be displayed as 5.00.3105.0106

If you are running Internet Explorer 5.01, the version number will be displayed as 5.0.2919.6307."

I thought the hourglass would make it into the final version but apparently not. It looks as though Microsoft is gearing IE more towards broadband connections, because that's about the only people that wouldn't miss the hourglass.

peemo - thanks.

Digobick - I am running a super fast cable connection and I still miss the hour glass even though page chnages are almost instantaneous.

dennilfloss - that's not the point. I don't want to move my cursor to the top just to see the hour glass. Like I said, the hour glass is only there for an instant anyway with my connection, but the point is that it feels like a lag when you click because nothing appears to be happening.

Bottom line is that 5.5 has nothing to offer over 5.01 besides print preview and I don't print all that much at home. I save that for my work laser.

IE5.5 was giving me constant blue screens of death and error messages. Needless to say i've reverted back to 5.1.

No, no problems whatsoever with IE5.5. I liked it since the beta came out.

If you feel the need to uninstal - MS System Info, Tools, Internet Explorer Repair tool and Restore the Previous Windows Configuration.

Only thing I've found irritating about IE 5.5 is that my bank (WF)doesn't support it for online banking, meaning I have to run Netscape if I want to see how little money I have in checking.
Otherwise, there's no noticable difference for me.

How does one pronounce vaporware? Is it vay-pur-wayr or is it Microsoft?

I hated it also and was giving me bsod or kept crashing every 1/2 hour so I went back to 5.1 Since win me uses the 5.5 explorer core I wont be touching that upgrade for a longtime untill they get it fixed.

The only problem I have with IE5.5 is the jerking screen when I scroll with a wheel. Other than that it works fine and I think it actually loads screens faster.

PS. I also noticed that the animated icons next to my favorites on the taskbar for different websites are missing. it looks so boring with the stupid explorer icon next to each icon.

I haven't even noticed a difference. I've actually come to like netscape 6, and if it supported a few things more I would use it instead.

It seems to load pages a bit faster for me. When on a 56k modem, you tend to notice those things. That alone makes it a keeper.

I absolutely agree that IE 5.5 feels slower than 5.01.

Try opening a new page by pressing CTRL+N ... man it takes forever even on my high-resources P3 825....(not to brag) ...

Anyway sometimes there is a lag when I try to access my favorites or links :(

Some websites also requires to be debugged with IE 5.5

I might switch back to IE 5.01 if this still happen frequently ..

5.5. screwed up my system big time. Kept getting page faults all over the place( sometimes within 1 or 2 minutes of booting up). Thought that maybe Windows was screwed up, since I was way past the official re-install Windows time frame :), and did an overlay. Then decided to un-install 5.5. Couldn't , because when I clicked the box to "revert to the previous version of I.E." there wasn't one, because it thought I had done a clean install. Thankfully, I keep a 2nd hard drive that I use for a system mirror about once a week. HOWEVER, I did not want to lose my current game positions in Nox, and U.T., so I had to swap a bunch of folders around. Saved U.T, but not Nox. Oh well.......

The hour glass thing don't bother me at all.

Oh, if you do open the link on a new window (shift+click), then it will show the hour glass. But thats too much trouble just for a damn hourglass. You really can't do much about this (*Hint* they don't care). So just move the cursor to the status bar when you're waiting for the page to load.

My only gripe is that I wish they had actually completed support for actual STANDARDS rather than their own goodies. I mean, they still haven't supported HTML4 fully (only missing a couple things though I think), CSS1, and especially CSS2. I guess they've added a bit more support for XML, but it would be nice if they had turned that up a notch instead as well. Most web pages don't utilize XML yet, but if the browser's supported it, perhaps we'd see more of it. I have to admit though, that new IFRAMES stuff they've done (where you can overlap content between frames) is pretty sweet :)

The hourglass? Ummmm, I didn't even notice it was gone until people started bitching about it. Haven't even seen the print preview function yet (haven't looked) either. And if you want to talk about vaporware... ummm take one look at Netscape. They FINALLY release what I would consider a public alpha of their version 6 browser... I missed out on that whole version 5 they put out I guess.... Oh wait... What have they been DOING for the past two years? Making HTML author's lives a living hell is what.

Now, I am really confused. I am using IE 5 5.50.4134.0600 with Win98SE. When I click on a link I still get the hourglass while the page is loading no matter where my cursor is.

WTF is everyone talking about??????????????

It's faster and more stable than 5.01 and there is no jerkiness whatsoever. Are we talking about the same Internet Explorer 5.5?

Yeah, that's weird. I don't think you should be seeing the hourglass. At least I don't on v5.50.4134.0600 which is same version... And I know practically everyone else doesn't as well. I guess count yourself lucky? ;)

I heard that comment about the missing hourglass before, during the beta trial and never thought much about it. After this thread, I went on a link clicking spree to verify.

Yep, its still there - I get the hourglass as always every time just as previsions versions of Internet Explorer 5.0, etc.

How can this be? I am running Win98SE.

EDIT: Doh! Of course it's Mycrowsoft. Same Product - Works great for some, half-assed for others, unworkable for others. It's the Beta Final Version - just wait for the next service pack or build 5.50. 51.
