I hate IBM!!!

This is the SECOND time my site has gone down this month because of hard drive failure. This is pissing me the hell off. I know it's not my host's fault though...... it's fvcking IBM's fault!!! WTF can't they make drives that don't fail!?!?!?!?! :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

And people wonder why AT has problems sometimes.

we have several IBM Shark DASD units (multi-terabyte fiber-channel hard drive storage servers) connected to our IBM S/390 and Z/server mainframes here at work... the hard drives in those things die all the time, at least one a month. of course there are dozens and dozens (multiple redundancy/hot swap) of super-high speed RAID drives in each unit that get used a lot 24/7.. but still

I have an IBM phone. the caller id is not even backlit. the thing really sucks, it always rings like 3 seconds after the rest of the phones in the house ring. POS.

oh, my friend had a 20 gig IBM deskstar that one day decided to puke and die.. for a while though it would do the "click of death" and the computer wouldn't boot, but if you opened the case and thumped on the hard drive a few times hard, and rebooted, it would work again

Dude, you shouldn't run a server with stand-alone IDE hard drives! If you really want your site to have 24/7 uptime, you gotta get a server with hot-swappable RAID 5! That way, if a drive goes bad, you can just pull it out and slide a new one in. If you set it configured right, the RAID controller will even rebuild the array automatically, and you don't even have to reboot!

On Friday night, I tried to boot my computer. I heard some funny sounds (possibly click of death) and I got the "HARD DISK FAILURE..." note. My heart dropped. After a few more tries, I did manage to boot it. I have a feeling that it's just a matter of time before it dies. Would it be wrong if I tried to sell it now? I guess it would. Oh well, I'm screwed. 🙁

valhalla, that's perfectly normal for that size of an array, actually.

In fact, it sounds like you have decently reliable drives there. Most multi-terrabyte arrays I know of had pretty much at LEAST weekly, if not daily, hotswaps going on due to drive failure. Granted, the daily ones was a 4.5-5TB array with 9GB drives. 😉

On topic: Well IBM's fail more than a lot of the normal IDE drives 🙂

RH71, your site is simply awesome..

I like IBM... only 'cuz my dad works for them and 'cuz my 60GXP has never failed me....😀

*click**click**wwrrrrrrrr* Oh, crap...:Q

😛

oh jeez you guys.. tonite at work we had our head Unix tech in doing some microcode upgrades on an IBM AIX machine... upgrading the microcode for fiberchannel controller - and when he rebooted the box, the ENTIRE configuration database was wiped clean. He's going to be up there all night long and well into tomrrow reconfiguring this box so the several thousand users that need to login to it tomorrow can access it.

talk about hating IBM! He was doing nothing but screaming extreme profanties at IBM all night! :Q

(btw, you can see the AIX machine he was working on at our website here picture #8 in the intro slide show 😀) tell me whatcha think of the website, I made it for our datacenter 🙂

(and no I'm not in any of those pics, those are some of our other operators)

yea i used to love ibm,, till my hd just went out,, my roomate had 4 75 gxps rma and 2 60gxp rma,, and now they upgraded him to a 120gxp which is going bad and he is in the process of rma that,, so im pretty much never going to buy a ibm hd,, when they replace it just sell it off and get a wd or maxtor,, it might not be as fast as ibms but they dont' die every week like ibms do :|
