You can go into Word and delete that part of the resume template you know.

I wish that'd stop them from caring.

nowadays.. it pretty much falls into a formula:

(forgive my programming.. its been years since ive done this)

var
cost(losing customer) = cost(advertisement to replace customer) + cost(installation of new customer) ;
cost(satisfied customer) = cost(monthly revenue generated by customer) - cost(doing what customer is asking);

if cost(satisfied customer) < cost(losing customer) then keep(customer);

i never had a company care about my extra-curricular activity.

whether i scoop food out at a soup kitchen or not has no effect on my ability to troubleshoot a PC or fix a user issue.

Nope... most cable companies follow the plan i put.

how do i know?

i worked corporate executive relations at 2 major ISP's for a combined total of 7 years.
when you complain to "corporate"... news flash.. you get a Supervisor or Senior Tech at your local call center... you don't get a "corporate" peon.

we were told... if the cost of making the customer happy is less than what they pay over 2 months... do it.

so.. if you get pissed.. dont call and ask for 6 months credit... a month .. you'll probably get it.

No it does not.
It DOES show your ability to sacrifice time and effort for no reward other than helping your fellow man, and believe me, your employer does care very much about such character attributes.
They wanna know what kind of PERSON they are hiring. You are more than just a body doing work. You're a complete human being, they just wanna know what kind.

doubtful.

i don't put down any 'extra curriccular' activities on my resume, and not once have i been asked if i have any.

all i get asked on my interviews is Troubleshooting Scenarios.

As well you should, seeing as how you are a technician.
BUT, more than one person looks at you as a potential employee.
Your future supervisor wants mostly to know about your technical skills.
HR people are stupid, they know nothing of those mysterious electrons. They just wanna know what kind of guy you are. And in most cases its at least a couple of people who make the decision to hire you. They need all the info you can get.

Lemme ask ya this: On all those jobs where you didnt fill out the application completely, did any of them hire you? One of the things I've noticed (especially for technician positions) is they like people who follow directions properly and complete everything.

When i've applied for jobs, i've never filled out applications first.
I send in my Resume and Cover letter... go in for an interview... and then when i'm in filling out the HR Paperwork for employment (w2, benefits paperwork, etc), then they're like "fill out the application for our records"

For the record.. i've had 6 jobs in the last 20 years. i've interviewed for 7. The one i didnt "get" .. i turned down because i got a better offer from another company.

Heh, if I could even remember my extracurricular actitives in HS and college were, putting them on my resume would be pretty silly. I guess it depends on your age, profession and experience.

I just interviewed a guy, granted it is for a high-level tech support position, but when I asked him what he enjoys doing outside of work/computers he had absolutely no answer. Couldn't even come up with something like going to the movies. Made me probe more into his social skills, and decided he wasn't right for the job.

Yea, us HR people are incredibly stupid and don't want to know anything except how many times you've helped an elderly lady cross the street. :roll:

Being an HR person, I can tell you the majority involved in recruiting couldn't give two shits about extracurricular activities. We actually look at the person's skillset, experience, and education, but if someone starts fluffing their resume with ec's, hobbies, activities, etc., it get's trashed.

I don't think I've ever been asked about it except maybe indirectly by the person who was interviewing that would be my direct supervisor and was curious about me personally. No HR person has ever asked which organizations I was a member of or anything like that o_O
