Hemingway Rocks. My favorites are For Whom the Bell Tolls and A Farewell to Arms. His short stories are good also.
But then, I never had to read him in an academic setting which may make all the difference.

I love to read Dickens, but Hawthorn I agree. The Scarlet Letter was awful.
