I get .405/mile :p.... But it only cost me <.05/mile to operate my honda! Its not costing him .35/mile unless he is driing a gas hog so you can't look at it that way.

Yes, too much commuting has made me daft, are you happy!?
No, but I'll be happy tomorrow when my commute is 1700 miles to Las Vegas for our trade show.

BTW, how long until your wife finishes grad school? If it's a year of two I would stick it out. If it's 5+ years I woud look for other options.

You are in an interesting position that kinda sucks in terms of location.

Im not sure how expensive stuff is where you live, but if I where in your position I might consider:

1. Getting an apartment closer to your job, live with your S.O. during the weekends (obviously only if apartment rent is cheap - say <$400 per month)

2. Do what you have been doing (can you stand the commute?)

3. Switch jobs (imho, last stand)

As I said earlier, those benefits would just be very difficult to let go of. You would definately immediately miss them the second you started the new job.

NEW JOB

Benifits and sick days are great and all, but with the raising price of gas, I'd bet it gets offset by that ridiculous commute. Not to mention how much that commute would make me want to kill myself.

How much are you spending on gas/car repairs? If you had an apartment in the city and traveled home on the weekends, you would save yourself the commute 4 days a week. 170 miles*4 days*50 weeks*$0.35/mile = $11900 a year = $700 a month. That's enough to rent an apartment. You could even get a roomie. ;)

But honestly I would think the apartment option would suck. I would want to see my wife more than just on the weekend.

Yea, you should be able to do better then the reimbursement rate. But if you think you can operate your vehicle for just $0.05/mile (cost of vehicle, gas, insurance, tax & registration, maintenance, etc.) you're kidding yourself. I just ran a quick spreadsheet for a new Honda Civic LX, keep it for about 200K miles (about 6 years at the OP's rate), $1200/yr insurance, about $700/year maintenance, etc. It comes out to about $0.22 mile. There's room to argue with my assumptions of course, but I doubt you'll come close to $0.05/mile

170 miles commute? I hope that is for all three days combined! :Q

If not, wouldn't it just be cheaper to stay in a Motel 6 near your office for two days?

Anyone that has done contract work will tell you to stay in your current job. Your taxes and expenses go way up when you go independent/self-employed. You'd need to make at LEAST $55,000 a year just to break even in take home pay with your current job.

And for a while that was 5 days a week, so 850 miles minimum, closer to 1000 when you consider going out for lunch and running errands
