I want things for cheap, but it seems everybody else wants to pay over retail for them. Why are people so stupid?

Well good thing I do know then, otherwise we may have had a problem.

People get carried away with bidding and a lot of sellers shill bid if they see the price lower than they expected. So, it is not really that easy to get a great deal.

I've been trying to buy a certain hard drive on there for the past few weeks so I can upgrade my RAID array. But closing bids for these things have been $70-$90. For a 300GB hard drive?!? These people are idiots. I've just been putting my $50 bid in and if I win great if not I'll bid on the next one.

idiots get caught up in the auction mentality. This is why i believe put in the bid you want to pay if you don't win. Oh well. It's ebay there will be another one on there in 10 minutes.

300GB HDDs.. that makes me feel like a nerd, because I have a few 300GB HDDs (averaging that size, they're between 250 and 320) lying around collecting dust :Q!

Depends. I got most of my stuff at a good price on ebay. Latest purchase was a Humminbird 383c GPS/Fishfinder for my kayak. Got it brand new at 299 including shipping whereas its around 450 everywhere else.

I don't know, I just don't know.

Because in the end, they feel they've won. It's a psychological thing.

It gets pretty bad sometimes on ebay. On one occasion when I was outbid on an item twice in a row by another member, I received a private message from the guy that outbid me that was basically taunting me that no matter how high I bid that he would outbid me.

The item was brand new, but out of print. After searching around I found one retail place online that still had the item in stock. Went back to ebay and made a bid of the retail price which once again was quickly outbid (by 10%) by the same guy followed by another taunting message.

Responded to him with a message containing the link to the online retail store and that I just bought the item from them and would have it at my doorstep in 24 hours, while he just bid 10% over retail and still has to wait 5 more days for the auction to end before it would even be shipped. He responded that he would not bid anymore if I was to outbid him again, which of course I did not (would of been bout 15% over retail then).

It could of been a honest guy that just got caught up on the bidding frenzy, or it could of been a "friend" of the seller that was just trying to artificially inflate the auction price...who knows.

I gave up ebay a long time ago. Everything I bid on ends up selling for retail or more, or it's a scam. I spent months looking for a tractor on ebay, every evening I'd look through the listings and report many of them as fraud. The few used machines I was interested in sold for more than what the local dealer wanted.

You understand that bidding before the last 1 min of the auction is not very smart?

I haven't bought anything on ebay in years. I haven't even looked for a year. It all costs more then retail. It just doesn't make any sense...the ebay sellers are slower, have worse service, a higher chance of screwing me AND cost more? And thats without the "used stuff is worth the same as new stuff mentality that you get when buying used stuff everywhere.
