I hate domain squatters

Am I domain squatter? I bought a domain purely to use as an email address. I have no website there. How do you know they aren't using it?

Some old dude owns mylastname.com.
He posts family photos, but hasn't updated it in 3 years.

I want to make it into an email site, so you can get webmail based on your first name.
Ex. john@smith.com, john2@smith.com, anne@smith.com, etc.

It just sucks to waste a domain like that.

Not as bad as the moron who owns links.com

He's had numerous offers for upwards of $750k for the domain, but he insists on trying to monetize it through... well... go look.

Edit: looks like he's updated it. Still, a shitty blog on a domain that's probably worth a million dollars in a good economy.

Wow... Maybe he is already rich and is doing it to cause a stir.

No, he's definitely not. He bought the thing like 18 years ago and has held onto it purely because he thinks he knows better than everyone else and because he continually believes he can monetize the name himself...which he most clearly cannot.

I know that he was offered nearly $500,000 for it recently and the purchaser wanted to turn it into a buy/sell link exchange domain for SEO purposes.

I think the domain just makes him feel important. Like I said, the guy's a moron.

The old site was absolutely hideous. It had a blue background, green highlights and yellow text. The only images were drawings of sausages with faces and arms. At that time he was trying to make it a Digg-style site.

well at least hes actually using it,

i actually own 3 domains with nothing on them i use for email

I could totally understand him hanging onto it if his last name was links, he owned a business named links, he owned a golf course, whatever, but to hold onto a domain just because you like it when people are falling over themselves to hand you a briefcase full of money is beyond foolish.

Some of you don't seem to understand domain squatting. Domain squatting is not when someone else uses a legitimate domain because they have a reason to use it. It's when a company purchases tens of thousands of domains with no intent of using it, merely to hope that some sucker out there is willing to pay thousands of dollars for it.

My wife started a business this summer. Before attempting registering the name with the state, she did a domain search on a well known registrar. The name she wanted was available, so she sent the paperwork to the state with that name. She made the mistake of not purchasing the domain right away, because barely a day after she did the search, the domain she wanted was taken by a squatter who has happily agreed to sell it to her for thousands of dollars. I'd pay someone thousands of dollars to sodomize him with a broom handle before I'd pay him for the domain.

Maybe he's waiting for several briefcases full of money..

Yeah, a car club I was involved with accidentally let the domain lapse and a squatter nabbed it up. While in the process of fighting to get it back, I registered the .org instead of the .com. They keep offering to "give it away to me for $2500", I loled since they obviously never bothered to look at the traffic stats of the site/domain before they grabbed it.

In the long run, I gave up trying to get it from them and let it go. It still sits out there with a $2500 price tag. I'm sure they are NEVER going to get their asking price.

But that's the thing, you aren't an asshole. The guys who want(ed) this domain have serious financial backing. If you aren't going to give them the domain for a half million, they'll find another domain / industry / whatever to invest in.

The only person he's hurting is himself. Everyone else has gone on with their lives and links.com only comes up as a perpetual joke.
