That is alll

the key word is SERVICE......which they have zero

but i've read somewhere that dell is like #1 in customer service.

they used to be awesome, back when i used a dell (a good 2-3 years ago)

now they are just awful, imho.

I've had to phone Dell twice regarding my DOA Canon S400... Both times (Home support) I navigated through the menus rather easily, and spoke to a CSR within four minutes.

As with any recorded menus, just select the option that will get you a CSR the quickest. No need to enter in information or anything.

I'm not saying that nobody will have problems (or that toant didn't), but I'm willing to bet that a number of the Dell bashers in this thread have never even phoned Dell support.

I fix dells for a living, and every time i've called for specifics on something it's only been 2 or 3 menus and i get to talk to someone right away! and i've only ONCE gotten someone who sounded like Apu

just tried to return one of those failed 120 gig WD OEM hard drives under dell's 1 yr warranty. after 30 minutes getting bounced and forth in the phone system maze, i got some dude from india telling me i cannot return it but they can provide troubleshooting support for the harddrive. so i told the dude on the invoice it states it has 1 yr warranty and he put me on hold for another 5 minutes of silence...came back telling me dell will take it back. then i spend the next 10 minutes repeating my shipping info.

Yep, also makes you wonder how many of these stories are "user error"...

Outsourcing, so they can pay some people in India less than 1/2 of what they would pay someone in the U.S.

Ah... I also hear that a lot of companies are outsourcing to Romania as well... I feel dead inside now.

You know, I often wonder how after scavenging hot deals and paying rock-bottom for a well-made system how people can expect stellar support. Those people you're talking to in India are the reason you can buy a 2.4 GHz 8250 system for $200. If you want the best support, go pay $2000 for a Mac and spare us your tirades.

Yah, it's pretty much my experience too.

5 years ago....Dell simply rocked. I remember when I worked for a small company and they bought a new $5000 server. The network guy was on the phone constantly with dell making sure everythign was setup right. Since we were late getting on the internet bandwagon we all shared one email account (only 1 computer w/ internet access). The dell tech support guy actually emailed my boss to verify that everything had been setup right, and gave him a direct number to call in case any other questions/problems cam up.

It was that experience, as well as me dropping my computer from waste high and it landing on blacktop (at work----taking it to client's site) and it working flawlessly even after the mishap that led me to tell everyone I knew, including family to buy Dell and they wouldn't regret it.

While I still think there server line support is great (not the cheapies....but the bigger boys).....I have definitely experienced firsthand the lack of customer support on the normal customer side. My sister is in school, and got a dell based on my advice. The system ran decent mind you ......except for a speeding clock issue. after 12 hours....the clock would always read about 30 minutes fast. After multiple calls to dell tech support, she basically gave up, because they unable to fix it. She almost missed an exam (20 minutes late) b/c of the speeding clock issue, and she still reminds me about it.

That being said---I also agree with the earlier post. when you get a server for $299 or $360, there's not much you can expect. Dell is solidly focused on growing---unfortunately for them----I can't see myself buying another dell based on their support anymore. I still lie their lappies, and their servers---but for my family, I recommend they buy gateway now. Mostly b/c there's a local store.

BTW--last time I called dell I felt like I was gonna have to key in my DNA sequence in order to get to a rep. But they're not as bad as alltel. Alltel requires phone, social, zip, and blood type in order to get to the main friggin menu.

The best deal I ever got from dell was 4 256mb dimm for 16 buck a piece, god I love those day!
And their high quality from you know, crucial! Nowaday you can't even get it at that price buying from dell or anywhere. I can't believe i sold it for 45 a piece and having to buy back at that price again so I can use it in my pc that need it. Generic Dimm just didn't cut it out for me, cheap but worthless.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA I have had nothing but bad experiences with Gateway computers.
I don't see why you would, all of their parts are retail items. Not to mention it's MUCH easier to get to one of their service reps than Dell,.
True for the most part. A lot of their PSU's are proprietary and some of their mobo's. Everything else is off the shelf. I think most all the OEM computers are mostly off the shelf nowadays.

Actually, they are ATX PSUs, and the motherboards are the EXECT same ones you can buy from intel. No, nothing in their machines is proprietary.

Me too. The product I ordered has been delayed for almost 2 months now. Of course I can cancel it, but they'll probably charge and ship it anyways (as they did before on a previous order).

What makes it worse is that I checked online, and they STILL say they have it in stock.

Yes they are ATX in a way, but the power cords that run into the motherboard power connector are in a different configuration that normal, making them incompatible with non-dell mobos.
