I hate CS

What was I thinking going into this major. Sure I enjoy computers, perusing other people's code and making fun little programs, but the Computer Science program at Cal Poly Pomona sucks a major one and I'm beginning to resent source code. Hell, it's even making me begin to question my future. The only other things I know in life is hip-hop and basketball (which I play for fun, not competitively), but neither are going to get me a stable career.

You can always try Econ - I know a few people that dropped out of CS to go into Econ. One of them jumped into Econ just for the girls. Haha. 😀

You're not alone... I think half of people who start in Comp Sci or Comp Eng do the same thing.

Not me, though, I'm sticking with it 😉

I would recomment a technical college instead if you are interested in working with computers still but prefer the hardware side. A technical study will set you up for that, but CS will not.

:Q I could've sworn you were majoring in being a Lifer, Tyler. :Q

just curious: what makes the computer science program at pomona suck?

Well, the professors for one, are horrible. One is an uber-genius who was a top student at Cal Tech back in the day and acts as if he's better than everybody (he probably is, but don't take it out on the students). He complains every class session about how stupid we are and how much better it was back in the day. The curriculum is messed up, there's no continuity in the classes. The knowledge you gain from one class is almost never used for the next. The people in it are anti-social. I'm the life of every CS class, and that in itself is wrong by nature.

well, this poses the question...how stupid are the people in the class? I remember one class I was in where the professor would ask a question about the topic he just spent the last hour trying to pound into the skulls of the idiots in the class and getting blank stares. One particularly funny point I recall was something like:

Prof: A shortest path should not have any cycles.
/prof asking a project group
Prof: So if a path has a positive weight cycle, can it be the shortest possible path.

blank stares.

Students are actually pretty responsive. There's a fair amount of interaction in the classes that I've taken. Only problem with the aforementioned professor, the time he actually teaches material is after a test/quiz going over the problems. He is rarely accessible during office hours for questions to and he often bashes questions in class.
