So my wife has been driving her Neon since she bought it new in 1997 (right before we met). She's long overdue for a new car, so we decided it's time, finances be damned. (We earn enough money to make the payments, there is just never an excess of $).
Buying a car is such a pain in the ass!
The salesman is actually not a problem at all. He's very low pressure, which suits us just fine. And pricing is not an issue. The employee pricing and rebates make the sale pretty simple and haggle free.
But dealing with my credit union..ugh. Talked to half a dozen different people before I found out the details of the loan. This is after 24 hours.
The tricky thing is coming up with a downpayment. Since we hadn't really planned on a new car purchase this month, we have little to spend on the downpayment after sales tax.
Sales tax at 7% + registration fees + title fees + extended warranty is nearly an additional 20% of the car price. And the credit union will only provide us a loan for up to 85% of NADA value. So needless to say, our plan of putting $0 down is pretty much out the window.
Most likely we'll try to get something from them on a trade-in, but it'll probably be less than what we'd get outright from a private party. And the wife is too anxious to get into her new ride to wait.
Not to mention, we have a merit increase at work which is 4 months past due, not to mention our quarterly bonus is a few weeks late. Damn that money could come in handy right now :|

I'lll be happy when it's over
