I hate buying cars *mini-RANT*

So my wife has been driving her Neon since she bought it new in 1997 (right before we met). She's long overdue for a new car, so we decided it's time, finances be damned. (We earn enough money to make the payments, there is just never an excess of $).

Buying a car is such a pain in the ass!

The salesman is actually not a problem at all. He's very low pressure, which suits us just fine. And pricing is not an issue. The employee pricing and rebates make the sale pretty simple and haggle free.

But dealing with my credit union..ugh. Talked to half a dozen different people before I found out the details of the loan. This is after 24 hours.

The tricky thing is coming up with a downpayment. Since we hadn't really planned on a new car purchase this month, we have little to spend on the downpayment after sales tax.

Sales tax at 7% + registration fees + title fees + extended warranty is nearly an additional 20% of the car price. And the credit union will only provide us a loan for up to 85% of NADA value. So needless to say, our plan of putting $0 down is pretty much out the window.

Most likely we'll try to get something from them on a trade-in, but it'll probably be less than what we'd get outright from a private party. And the wife is too anxious to get into her new ride to wait.

Not to mention, we have a merit increase at work which is 4 months past due, not to mention our quarterly bonus is a few weeks late. Damn that money could come in handy right now :|

buying a new car sucks
I'lll be happy when it's over

A new Neon SXT, which suits her fine.

She *really* wants a VW Cabrio (used, they don't make them anymore), but she thinks another Neon is more practical. Plus, New England winters would be hell to a Cabrio.

She'd considered a Scion TC or a Jetta (both are about $3k-4k more), but it's a little out of our budget ATM and she wants a car before winter.

Sometimes dealerships have the hook-up when it comes to loans. I compared my credit union against what the dealership could give me, and the dealership actually found a better rate and financed 100%. Nothing down.

she should just keep the one she has, save for a real car

atleast try out the Cobalt. compared to a neon its a godsend.

and about the same cost.

What'cha gettin?

New or used. If new, or Ceritfied Pre-Owned, ask the deal about manufacturer financing deals. Also ask them to try to beat your rate through any third-party banks they use.

Also, get the gap insurance if you'd be in a tight spot if the new car is ever totaled and insurance didn't pay out enough to cover the loan.

EDIT: A new Neon, I see... Yeah, get the gap!

The new corolla isn't half bad, and they last forever. You may want to look into one of those, depending on your budget. I don't believe they're all that much more than what you're looking at.

I love cars, but would really take a pass on the Neon SXT.

Isn't there something/anything else she'd like in the price range?

I like the Cobalt suggestion...

she should just keep the one she has, save for a real car

Like I said, her current car has been 100% reliable.

She is not big on "image" or performance, just wants something reliable and similar in size to what she drives now.

Chrysler has really drug down Daimler, industry analysts are calling Chrysler a black hole with poor quality cars & say Daimler is worth 1/3 of what it should be because of Chrysler dragging them to the bottom...

neon has the WORST realse of ANY car

get a toyota or honda, even used it will be a better car and you'll save on tax and license

COME ON. 2000 Civic or something!

Daimler Chief to Step Down

DaimlerChrysler's stock has plummeted 41% since the $36-billion acquisition of Chrysler. Critics say the deal diverted the company's attention from its Mercedes-Benz brand to fix Chrysler's problems as well as others.

I'm not so sure Chrysler's fix will last...

Lastest news release says MB USA had it's best July ever, selling nearly 10% more then the previous year.

Chrysler is also making a killing on the 300 and doing fairly well with it's Jeep line, they're going to be fine since they're not going to die a quick death from the drop in SUV sales like Ford and GM. The big problem with DCAG... Smart. Smart is eating all the company's profits. MB and Chrysler are both getting better and making more money. Smart is a giant money pit. Kinda like Bugatti for VW except bigger. That's why DC stock has dropped so much.

I know I shouldn't say this since I work for DCAG but the Neon is an old tired car. It was pretty damn good compared to its competition in 95 when it came out. Now, its overdue for a quick death.

I say try out a Hyundai, with it's long warranty and the increased quality and reliability, it should be great as basic transport and well within the budget. Otherwise, I'd wait for dealers to get desperate about Corollas on their lots. Fit and finish is best in class by far and of course Toyota reliable with good resale. Last year the dealer I was working at had some cars ready to go at <$13k with basics like autotrans, AC, and power windows+locks.

Yeah, I know! Crazy huh?

But then again, I have a VW that has treated me well...

I don't know about Neons--except that when they're functioning, they're not bad cars (I've driven several, but never owned one). But VW... Don't get me started. For every one VW that's been a "great car" for however many hundred-thousand miles, there are three that have been total sh!tboxes.
