They make that Herpacil stuff that's supposed to help take care of cold sores. I never get them so I don't know how effective it is.

There might be some stuff for the cold sore, but the best way to deal with it is to wait it out. Don't pick at it as this will make it stay longer. Unfortunately, once you get a cold sore you are infected for life and you will continue getting them. Cold sores interestingly enough are caused by the Herpes II virus that infects the nerves behind the lip and mouth. For the most part the virus lays dormant until such events as being sick, stress, or just having a down day somehow sets them off and they do their thing. It is transmittable only when you have the sores, so don't go around kissing anyone right now. It should clear up in a few days, but yeah it stinks to have them.

I've found that Abreva works wonders. You have to start applying it to the cold sore as soon as you feel it start tingling. Definately shortens the duration of the cold sore. If I start using Abreva at the first sign of a cold sore, it usually doesn't last more than a couple days.

yep, that or Denavir, but you have to get it by prescription. your doc or dentist can prescribe it.

you can still use it even if the cold sore has come out and it still will help heal it faster.

Abreva is also excellent help for windburned lips...if it wasn't so expensive.

I used Campho-Phenique until I recently switched to Abreva. C-P is good for general cold sore pain killing but in my experience, Abreva's been better at shortening the length of the cold sore.

To the OP: Try different stuff and use what work for you. Personally, I tend to drink hot tea like it's going out of style when I get sick.

abreva does work quite well if used early enough and lessens the size of the sore and shortens healing time. the best solution is getting a valtrex prescription.

What is a cold sore? I've had a million colds/sinus infections/allergy bullsh!t but never a cold sore.

Bottle of Campho-Phenique at the local store should be between $ 4.00 - $ 6.00
Wal-Mart should have it near the band-aids & ointments.

abreva is around $15 for a tiny tube but it goes a long way as you use very little at a time.

for those who use abreva, do you stop using it once the sore is open?

I've never had a cold sore break open when using Abreva. If you keep it from drying and cracking it shouldn't be a problem.
