I had to buy a car quick.

My car died and I had to buy something quick. I saw a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with every option under the sun and a V-6 engine.
I needed the 4wd.
So is this car any good?
(I'll probably only keep it 6-12 months til I get a new one)

My family has owned 4WD vehicles their entire life and I can't think of any instance where the 4WD was a finanical liability in regard to repairs.

So long as you actually use the 4WD more than once every few years you keep things in working order and things don't cake, sludge, or dry up.

Plus don't do any bonehead moves like dropping it into 4LO and trying to do 55MPH on the highway and you'll be fine.

I don't understand the fuss.

I recently got a 98 ford explorer for $3350. Off ebay 🙂. Had the sunroof, 4wd, leather, the works! :-D. I think you will like it very much. How much didyou see it for?? :-D

79,000 and I paid 7,000. It has no dents, no rust, no accidents.
About a thou below the kelly blue book.
btw it has the moon roof. What is the difference between a sun roof and a moon roof?

 
honestly i don't think there is a difference between the two. i could be wrong but lol. sunroof, moonroof, same thing? 😕 mine had some rust underneath but a mechanic i took it to said it shouldnt' be a issue. i have to replace the transmission gasket and filter and get a new pin put in for the stabilizer (probably about $200 altogether) and the windshield was cracked but i got that replaced. bluebook was like 6500 used with the mileage, in the end i'll probably be like 2500 below bluebook :-D. has a few light scratches but i expect that is any used vehicle most likely 🙂. enjoy your new car. i'm enjoying mine :-D
 
They're not bad off-road, but when I drove an Explorer in the city it was an incredibly awful ride. I really hated it.

i was under the impression that the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof was that the sunroof was not glass and a moonroof was glass and could be seen out of while closed.

My brother's 4WD is a money pit I've kept abreast of. My ex mechanic had a beautiful late '70s Ford 4WD that he couldn't use because he absolutely could not get a front spindle for it. My foreman's relatively new Chevy 4x4 ZR2 required a $180.00 bearing replacement. Not sure why it wasn't under warranty. Used vehicles break down, and need repair, there's no escaping that. But, the added complexity and rarity of 4WD just compounds the cost.

Seriously though, you'll probably have a bunch of minor annoying problems but you'd have those with any make/model of used car. Don't worry about it...unless it was abused.

Gas mileage sucks though.

gotta agree with this one. My buddy's family has 3 explorers (Mom, Dad and him) and all 3 required major repairs with the 4 wheel drive systems. All different items though. My buddy bought an extended warranty and they refused to cover the lastest repair to the transfer case because they had 'exceeded their lyability' in payouts. In other words, they had payed well more than the cost of a new vehicle in fixing that one.

The DPFE - differential pressure feedback egr (sensor) you mentioned is a very common failure and can be circumvented with periodic removal and cleaning of the sensor itself. Although the acidic environment it is exposed to (exhaust gas - and polluted intake air) will inevetably take its toll on any electronic component.

Just a question though , did you replace it? Or are you driving around with a check engine light on?

Thats interesting info cause when I called my mechanic to make an appointment to check out the car and I told him what model the car was the first thing he asked was is the check engine light on. I guess thats a common problem with these cars.
