I had no idea South Africa was in so much trouble...

I knew Zimbabweans were fleeing to other parts of South Africa where they weren't welcome, but the anti-immigration violence is shocking. The stories that are coming from such a vital city, Johannesburg, leave me speechless.

This morning I was in at 630 am to support a video conference call between an office we have in Johannesburg, our branch in London, and our headquarters in Baltimore. Little did I know that I was talking with someone on the phone this morning that was working 20 minutes away from deadly raids and shootings. I'm not sure how someone can go on working a 9-5 knowing that such turmoil is right outside their doors. It really hit me hard...

You'll learn that in most countries with turmoil, people stay strong by continuing their lives. For example you can see people shopping in and around malls right after terrorist attacks (suicide bombings) in the middle east.

As if that's a bad thing?

It's not so much the violence, but the reason behind the violence. This isn't a religious battle. This isn't a "holier than thou" war. This isn't an invasion by the heads of countries that believe they are superior. This is simply human beings fleeing violence only to fall victim to more violence because they are not welcome.

Isn't it great that now that apartheid is gone that people can all live together as equals!

*disclaimer* I'm not saying it was right, just that the people that were complaining about being oppressed are now oppressors.

I was listening to NPR today, and they were talking about the SA mess. Apparently in SA people have uber xenophobia and tremendous hate against immigrants, even though they all have the same skin color. It's basically extreme racism. People raid immigrant houses and kill the residents, then loot all the valuables. You can see people getting burned alive on the streets. The SA officials don't give a fuck and let these things happen. Where are the hippies who are so hot about dissing China's lack of humans rights when what's going on in African countries are worst by 10s and 100s fold. Oh that's right, nobody gives a shit about Africa but the luxury goods it exports.

I wonder how they're gonna contain this mess when SA hosts World Cup in 2010.

best time for teh sales!

South Africa used to have the world's highest car jacking rate.
I remember seeing a video of car jacking deterrents.

One was a flamethrower, aimed up from under the driver's side door.
Another was a spring loaded blade, that would chop legs off at the shin.
Another was a high voltage door handle.

It all went to hell after the apartheid ended. All the people capable of maintaining order in the country (i.e. the white folks) ran for their lives, along with pretty much anyone who was educated. The blacks got their country back, but look where they are now.

'tis a shame. South Africa is a beautiful country...

One could argue that apartheid led to this. People used to living under one oppressive governance that is suddenly removed with no cohesive plans for building their new nation? Sounds to me like a recipe for chaos.

I don't think bignateyk really understands. Especially with adding in 'the white folks'

Actually, there were stable African kingdoms resembling early European nations before the Europeans came and fucked everything up.
