I had an eargasm today

At work during a training session we got to demo a Martin Logan Clarity 5.1 setup connected to a Denon 2507 receiver playing Pink Floyd's Money on a SACD. We then switched over to a Springsteen concert DVD. After that, we watched a few scenes from Kill Bill 1/2 on Vienna Acoustics Mozart 5.1 setup. Jesus. My jaws dropped, to say the least.

Wow, that's amazing, where do you work?

Best Buy 😛.

If you're confused, slowly step away from the thread.

For the most part, I understand the majority, but usually you don't hear people saying all of that in one setting. It was definitely a mind-boggler for the non-hardcore audiophiles.

Not too shabby...working on a Sunday?

12 hour day today 🙁. Got there at 8 and left at 8, it was rough.

Could be worse 😛 I remember when I "had" to help set up some Dynaudio Evidence speakers...or Revel Ultima Studios...fun times.

Which BB do you work for? The ones around Michigan are only now starting to build mini-Mag's in-store.

you'll probably die the first time a female moans into your ear...

then again...you still have a few years before that will happen I suppose

😀.

I work over in a central NJ one, but I don't work in Mag just yet. We've had one in our store for about a year or so, but I've only been there for about two-three months.

Holy crap Dartworth, in every single thread I make, you threadcrap. Grow up. I don't know what you're trying to prove.

They're OK. Best 5.1 system I've ever heard was using Legacy Whisper loudspeakers which utterly annihilate Martin Logan, but at $12k a pair they should. It takes about $12K to get a cone based speaker to match the transients of a panel anyways - IMHO.

I otherwise like Martin Logan's electrostat technology and find it a breath of fresh air over cheaper cone based designs. All that radiating area delivers awesome detail and depth you can't get with a coil base drivers, unless you use a lot of them which results in ungodly complex cross over designs.

However, having heard high end Martin Logan and Magnepan side by side, I preferred the better dynamics of Magnepans and vasty cheaper price. $550 get's you a pair of Magnepan MMG's, and they'll easily match the ML's used in the Clarity set-up. Unfortunatley Magnepan's succesfull mail order business doesn't make them very viable for hi-fi shops which need to make a margin.

Absolutely there are speakers out there better then the ML's, but they're one of the best that we carry in our store, so therefore, one of the few high-end speakers I've been able to hear. However, I have found that with classical music, they sound like pure ass. I'm not sure if it's a limitation of the electrostatic technology, but everything sounds muddy and just not impressive at all.

I've never had the chance to listen to Magnepan, but I'll def. read into them. Thanks!

Just fyi, if you thought that stuff was amazing, there's another whole league of equipment above that 😉

Oh, I know 😀. Can't wait for the day when I'll be able to listen to that. I'm not really into the speaker scene. I'm much more into the IEM scene.

Denon 2507 receiver

😕

Eek, typo FTL. At first I meant the 2807, but after double-checking, it was actually the 3806 with the ML's. The 2807 was powering the VA's.

I now reject your whole story as shens 😛 😉

Haha yoyo 😛. Whatever you say.

The achilles heel of planar technology is they lack mass, and lack of mass means a lack of dynamics. This is why you didn't like the ML's for classical, and I totally agree with your opinion.

Magnepan's have more 'weight' behind them, because although they are based on similiar technology, it's a more active driver system. I found the Magnepans better suited for most types of music, more 'open' sounding, and they are simply cheaper.

Just remember with all planar type speakers they require your head in a vice for the best sweet spot. Cone based speakers don't have this problem and generally have a wider sweet spot.

AV Receivers are otherwise over-rated. My $250 all digital Panasonic sounds as good as anything I've heard under a couple grand. Get good speakers and good source material.

Interesting stuff about the electrostats and the Mag's. However, I'll have to disagree with you about the receivers. One of our demos today, we switched from the 2807 to a lower-end Denon receiver with the Mozarts (can't remember the model, but the MSRP was around $400) and quality decreased dramatically. Instruments were much harder to differentiate, but I have to admit that the vocals didn't change much.
