I had an achievement today... semi-long story.

It's embarrassing and probably not a really big deal for most of you guys, but for me, I amazed myself today.

I have a friend who runs triathlons take me out today to help me out a little bit. He took me out and showed me a few things that helped me out incredibly, and let me use his heart rate monitor.

Took me to Van Courtlandt Park here in The Bronx and walked me through about 1.5 miles of trail, mostly uphill and unpaved. I thought we were going slow, but he said don't worry about it since my heart rate was ~115-130 and I didn't really need to push myself harder.

When we were done, I was like that's it? He said no, you came to jog and run a little bit, that was just the warmup.

Feeling cocky, I saw the trail he wanted me to run, and it's about 1.2 miles. I said let's go for it. He showed me a few things first, such as leaning into the run to start, leaning so that I land on my front-middle of my foot instead of on my heels (which I had real problems with) and of course proper breathing and especially exhaling.

After about 10 minutes he said let's do it.

He had me jog around the track, and about 10 seconds in, I was already tired. He did NOT let me stop, he just said slow down, I'm trying to target 150bpm, and any more is just killing myself.

I actually MADE it around the track! The last 200 feet or so he had me run full blast, and his monitor clocked me at 9+ MPH. I didn't stop for crap. I ran a lot in the grass to keep my feet from hurting, and alternated between dirt and paved dirt.

I know it sounds retarded, but I am so frikken happy. I am heading out now to get my day going, so I probably won't be able to respond to comments, but dammit - I felt the need to say something. 🙂

I averaged a 19 minute mile, but still. I am definitely going to do this on the weekends on top of the gym, this was SOOOOOO much more fun and the heart rate monitor claims I lost 1000+ calories.

I peaked a few times at 186bpm, which was concerning, but I guess with time I'll control that. I know now to keep it ~150 for fat burning.

Just felt the need to rant - I can't believe I actually made a mile in "jogging" mode. 🙂

Helps a lot to have someone motivating you.

That's awesome man! Congratulations. It's great to hear about your accomplishment, especially seeing how far you've come from your original post. You must be eating better if you had the energy to sustain that run, and that's good too.

Keep it going. Small accomplishments now lead to bigger accomplisments later. The point is that you're getting better, and it's going to happen slowly in small steps. For you, today, the proof is in the pudding. Small accomplishments keep you motivated to keep going, too. If you get a little better everytime, you're making progress, and that's the point. Keep in mind, too, that what you did today may seem small to some people, it'll also seem huge to others.

Keep it going man!! And keep posting about your results. Telling people about your progression is one of the best things about such progression.
🙂

Thanks for the encouragement. I went out to go buy some computer stuff with a friend and to get some headphones for myself, and I didn't realize the small beating I took. I was fine for the most part, but sitting in a car for 30+ minutes made me realize that I need to stay mobile after a workout.

I'm lying down now and I feel, not bad really, but hurty. It's a good hurt though. I'm excited, but have to do it myself next Saturday. I can't wait. I know I can do it now. Just have to work on proper running form. I think that's my biggest hurdle right now. (And looking down at the ground when I run...)

That's awesome dude! I think you brought up a very good point that many people who are starting to run or work out in any fashion fail to realize: that you need to start off way easier than you think you should! Too many people try to sprint when they first start running, and can't make it more than 30 seconds, and then give up because "it's too hard." As long as you pace yourself (and using a HR monitor is a great way to identify what effort you should be doing), you will be able to keep it up and improve. Congratulations!!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, you're going to be sore tomorrow, and if you're not that sore, you should to do a recovery run. Basically a short 15min get the blood moving thing. Otherwise the soreness will last a few days. However if you do hurt more than just a bit, skip it and deal with the soreness.

Hahaha, yeah. I fell asleep at ~9 yesterday and woke up at 6 this morning. I never get that much sleep. This morning I feel fine, but I definitely feel sore in a few places. Not as bad as I thought it would be, which, funny enough, I am sort of disappointed about. 🙂

I am eager to start running again. I really want to spend some time with form. Looking for an inexpensive (but not cheap) heart rate monitor. I think it will help greatly with my quest to lose weight.
