What's the point of having a site if you take it down because you have an increase in visitors? Driving people away?

Good point and we're not sure why his web site went down.

During the media frenzy of Black Friday 2004 we had to upgrade to a dedicated server, despite thousands of hits an hour it performed like a champ!

Count your blessings you left your previous web host because your account would DEFINITELY be suspended.

DeviousTrap has some serious hardware at his disposal

You've obviously never experienced a sharp increase in traffic. It can kill a server if it's not able to handle it. Most sites only have servers that can handle their every day traffic plus a little more.

exactly. Plus if it's on a shared server there are software checks to keep a site from utilizing too many resources and bringing down other people's websites on the same machine.

The point being, people build web sites to get traffic coming to them.
I see that after I posted, he made mention of upgrading his server.
If I can explain anything else for you, LMK.

The fact is that i-hacked is on a shared server, not a dedicated server. I had to play with some settings to get him up and running. Yes, sites are built to grow, but not to the extent that affected the site. Before the mention on TV there were about 30 people on the site at a time - as soon as it was mentioned that jumped to almost 600 trying to get on at once. Big difference, and a shared hosting server is not designed to take that kind of load.

The server has a bunch of empty room to handle more than normal but so many concurrent connections involves modifying server settings to accompany the site, as well as possibly taking it down just so that one site doesn't affect the whole server.
