You've obviously never experienced a sharp increase in traffic. It can kill a server if it's not able to handle it. Most sites only have servers that can handle their every day traffic plus a little more.

exactly. Plus if it's on a shared server there are software checks to keep a site from utilizing too many resources and bringing down other people's websites on the same machine.
