I guess I'm getting old... can't play certain games anymore:

Yup. Or very close. 25 is physical prime.

Depends on what you're doing.
Olympic gymnasts are usually pre-teens.

But for video games I noticed I slowed down a lot at 25. Couldnt play mario anymore. Never realized how important reflexes were.

34 and the thought of playing anything other than BF4 makes me want to shoot myself in the face. All games lost all appeal. Only BF has stuck with me and I still do quite well. I'd say I'm at least as good as I've ever been and probly better.

When people play games, we are basically self-medicating, seeking to balance our dopamine levels. The stresses of work and adult life affect your brain chemicals significantly, life in comparison was stress-free as a student. So you basically will adjust to whatever types of games that will stimulate just enough activity to your dopamine levels back to normal, without the stress of hardcore gaming, which you are already overloaded on from work.

When you retire, you probably won't care anymore and be able to play hardcore fps again :D

This is a pretty awesome theory and it makes sense. I recently entered the professional world where I'm working hard, busy all day, then I come home and I have to talk wedding stuff with my fiance. Now all I want to do is drink, read wikipedia, and sleep. Playing new games especially is rough, I don't have the motivation to learn, I'd rather build a city in SimCity 4 instead.

I went back to CS Go a few nights ago after a very long break.

4 hours session first 2 hours I was getting murdered and still getting back the feel for the game I was at the bottom of the scores on both CT and T side. Then in the other two hours I slowly crept up the ladder to finish in the top 2-4 positions and held it.

Still having fun at 65+. I just set things on easy and have been enjoying exploring Far Cry 3 lately. There were no video games when I was young and I am still in awe of the complex 3d graphics in the new games.

Yeah, I've never looked at it in a biological sense. I'm pretty much the same way I interact with gaming now that I've grown up. When I have a month or two where work is slow, I tend to focus more on games like Titanfall and CS:GO. Right now though with school and work picking up, the most I can handle if I do play is an hour max of some non-competitive indie games.

For anyone who is saying their reflexes are slowing etc, try exercising. I've found even when I was 14 that exercising helped with reflexes/synapses for games. It's not a placebo, everyone who gets lethargic and out of shape loses their wits and quickness, mentally and physically.

If you want to be good at games, you have to be good at life, which requires lots of good food, exercise and sleep. It's not really anything else like "old age", unless you're really, really old... like can't drive a car anymore.

edit to add- if you eat well (organic foods, balanced meals), exercise and sleep well... you will beat those kids 1/4th or 1/3rd your age who stay up all night and drink Mt. Dew all day. Unless you're young or old enough to be taking dumps in Pampers, I can pretty much promise that. If you're overweight and generally sluggish from a decade+ of inactivity, don't expect much out of your 5 senses in working well with your brain.

Your 30 and play Pokeman that is just wrong.

Please turn in your man card!
Funny that you mention it. I'm 44 and was considering trying one of those Pokemon games. Not because of Pokemon, I never watched the show or played any of the games yet, but I was curious because of the strategy/tactics involved in battling different enemies with strenghts/weaknesses and responding with your own creatures. Sounds fun and interesting to me.

Guess I'm looking for something like my favorite game of all time, Gladius, where you are owner of a gladiator troupe and have to fight in gladiator matches with restrictions, so you had to choose a team of your gladiators that would better match the opponents and terrain.

For first person shooters especially, it's all about how much time you can devote. As I've gotten older I have been unwilling to devote the endless hours of time to be good at games like CSGO. I was good enough to reach Gold Nova Master/Master Guardian but if I wanted higher ranks I'd probably would have had to double the time I played. The game got frustrating to play with how little time I was willing to devote to it, and instead I've just deleted all online competitive games and have used that time to do other things.

I'm in my mid 40's now, but remember calling in sick to work on a few occasions just so I could stay home and play Railroad Tycoon on my Amiga computer in the early 90's.

Yeah... I haven't been able to play FPS and RTS games worth a damn since I turned 33. They give me a headache now.

I think that's why I liked the new XCOM game so much... I could still kick ass without the twitch reflexes. :) Same deal with Simcity... although the new version is horrible.

I am betting most at 25 here are no where even close to physical prime. Including those debating it's true.

I suspect many of us were in much better shape in our teen years playing sports in high school. Then, after going on to our careers sitting in cubes and offices all day ... and not so much exercise any more... That likely contributed to MANY people who peaked in 20s and have been downhill since...

i'm 33 now and i'm in better shape now than I was in high school or my 20s.

Reason why.

i'm in the gym 3-4 days a week since I turned 30! I rarely miss gym days and keep it constient which is mandatory at a gym. People that go 3 times a month your wasting time and money.

That is great!! Congrats on getting into gear and shape. I hope you keep motivated and stay at it!

I have no hope at being in my high school shape (I used to swim 6000 yards daily, 6 days a week in the evenings, and lift weights 3 days a week in the AM) ... Essentially, 18 hours in the pool, 3 hours in the gym every week.

But, I am in terribad shape since I've been working in an office setting for 12 years and not working out.

Fiancee and I got an Elliptical and we are both using it 30 min 3 days per week for now ... planning to work up to 30 min every day ... but we are just starting out now .. and in very very round shapes.

Wow even in highschool that is alot.

I know for most people its just finding the time the drive is still there!

I think it is all about how much you care. You'll be better at games that interest you more. You're just losing interest in certain types.

Very true. First person shooters and fighters were high interest for me in the past, but now I'm trying to complete as many games as possible on high difficulty especially RPGs.
