Deer around here are seriously over-populated due to a near-zero number of natural predators. All they do is eat peoples shrubs and run in front of cars on the highway.

As a rule I too am against hunting (unless you plan on eating what you kill) but at least in Connecticut its the only way to keep from being over-run.

There are some things about modern hunting culture that I don't much like, but on the other hand I don't think you can get all touchy-feely about the death of an animal at the hands of a hunter if you like to, you know, eat meat.

If we humans weren't intended to eat those animals...why were they made so fucking tasty?

Personally, I think trophy hunting should be illegal...but if you're personally going to eat the meat from your kill...no problem with that at all.

(no, I don't mean you have to eat it all...all by your self, but you, your family, and maybe even close friends have to use the meat, not just donate it after the kill.)

Some people just do not have a clue of what would happen without some sort of control.

Lots of those big beautiful animals would die from starvation and disease a slow horrible death. Not to even say anything about the number of traffic accidents and people hurt in those accidents.

So you would rather see them disease ridden and starving on the roadside. Along with people getting hurt in accidents involving wildlife.

Ignorance = no valid opinion.

Just don't be wasteful and I'm cool with it. As previously mentioned, hunting is actually beneficial, as long as it's not abused. But like anything else, there's always an asshole in every crowd....

Must be a lot of vegans on this forum......

No hunting in MI would equal no crops from the overun of the forrest rodents. Plus, they are tasty.

Exactly this. We've done a good job of nearly eradicating apex predators in the US (ZOMG!!!!! Woollves are teh dangerous killerz!!) that man is pretty much the only way to keep things in balance. And sterilization programs are not going to be that effective. Plus you can't ensure that only the strongest reproduce; that another thing that apex predators, like wolves, help sort out.

Proud member of the real PETA - people eating tasty animals.

Vegetarian / vegan are Native American for 'sucks at hunting'. :)

I'm all for wildlife management. I'm all for guns and bows. I can see a thrill and sense of accomplishment in successfully tracking and killing a wild animal. Mostly just for the doing. But also for knowing you have the skill to do it. It's about being self sufficient. It's like doing your own home repairs, or being able to back up with a trailer.
This is a computer forum. You probably know how to build a computer or program, something like that. You have some pride in being able to do it yourself instead of having to pay someone to do it for you. Same thing.
My fat butt has no desire to trek through the hills for big game. But some long distance groundhog eradication sounds like fun.

But yea, one aspect of hunting I least connect with is what I'll call 'the collector.' The guy that takes pride in getting particular species, travels around the world to get all the big game animals. Maybe it's unfair, since I don't really hang out with those types, but I just get a vibe that they think they're better or that they're special. It's not about being self sufficient for them, it's about having a trophy to show off.

Hunting is necessary. IF not for it would do more damage to the deer population.

I have hunted from the time i was 9 years old. I have taken my 13 and 9 yr old hunting (small game only).

so yeah im pro-hunting and fishing.

What i don't like are those that just hunt for the sport of it. I have seen guys kill a deer and just take the head. WTF that is a waste of about 100lbs of amazing meat! what the hell are you doing? IF you don't want it give it away. SOMEONE will take it!

uh.. this reads like someone who strongly believes in The Purge. And that's the second time in 24 hours I've referenced The Purge on these boards. What is going on?

Exactly. For those that haven't had venison, or elk, it's delicious.

Many hunters enjoy going after trophies as well as consuming the meat. As long as someone eats it, and it isn't simply poaching, who cares?

Definitely a bunch of vegans in here.

Also, for the guy referencing the Purge... uh, yeah, can you imagine what that population would look like without them being hunted? Larger game have no major predators other than humans. There are wildlife programs that basically monitor and control the population each year to ensure that the numbers are healthy for the environment. Too much leads to disease and starvation, too little leads to other problems and eventually extinction. Game such as deer and elk require a hunter to purchase a tag for each animal harvested. They only sell so many tags so as to ensure the population is strong but yet not over populated. Without that, the population could potentially see too much decline and in some areas too much growth.

You don't have to be a hunter to understand that basic concept. And you don't have to hunt, there are plenty of others that enjoy it and the product received from doing it.

If hunters wanted to really do it for population control they would go for female only tags. One male can knock up a dozen females a year who can in turn give birth to multiple twins. Population control is taking out the birthers. But there's no trophy case set of antlers there to show off.

Most states practically give away anterless only permits to encourage that practice.

Thanks for ruining my morning.

That's the most tragic picture I have seen in a long time. Thousands of beautiful creatures, that make the ocean shimmer like a jewel, being dragged to their eventual cruel and unthinkable end.

We should care for the earth and all its inhabitants, love them, nurture them, but instead we inflict our evil humanity on earth and its jewels like a terrible blight.

It's days like today I am ashamed to admit I am human wonder how Earth still accepts our existence.

God Bless.
