Congrats on getting into the nuke school. From what i've read, in the past each applicant was screened up the wazoo. Mucho gracias mi amigo.

back in the day every office going into nuclear power had to interview with Rickover himself. i heard lots of whacked stories about those interviews

I had to fly up to Washington and interview with a couple people, one of them being Admiral Bowman, the Chief of Naval Reactors. He just asked me a couple questions and sent me on my way. The other interviews were technical or personal.

can you provide a link to how much the different levels of officers make? if the salary is better than the private sector (i'm a chemist), i might consider it.

Basic Pay Chart

Looks like a brand new Ensign gets $2343 a month, plus Subsistence ($184) and Housing (depends on your location), which are not taxed. I think my BAH for Charleston is about $940.

I just read a few days ago that BAS for O's is a little over $200 now ($213 or something -- haven't received my first pay for the year though). One tip on BAH -- don't use all of it for your rent, or utilities will kill you. ;)

Do junior officers on subs get their own cabins?

the JO's on Tridents were 2 per room

better than the 9 per room us enlisted guys had ;)
Heh, I was a Nuke ET on the Lincoln (CVN-72) and I was lucky enough to get into Forward RC berthing. 40 dudes in that space. :(

If my father hadn't been serving on the Lincoln when I was graduating from Prototype I'd have gone on the Pennsylvania. I missed out.

Congratulations! Probably the biggest piece of advice I can give to a newly minted Ensign is to LISTEN to what your chiefs have to say. Ask them their opinions REQUENTLY. In short, learn from them!

Be sure to note that pay raises within the first few years of service are very aggressive.

I just got my O2 last month (automatic at 18 mo.) and get $4530/$3760 a month before/after taxes. You would probably add $120 or so to those because my BAH is for Texas.

I assume the raises are this aggressive within the first few years because they want you to stay in. It makes sense; When my initial 4-year term of service ends and I'm deciding whether or not to re-up, I'll be looking at $5460 a month pre-tax.

And yes, I know these amounts are nothing compared to what you guys in the civilian sector are pulling in :)

Nah, it went up but not by that much. $183.99 for officers. I'm still not sure how they justify it being so low when it's supposed to offset the cost of food.

Anyhow, to the new officer, again, congratulations. Maybe we'll cross paths one day if I ever get the chance to call in NGF :)

and people complain about salaries in the military. That's pretty darn good considering the other benefits and non taxing of the BAS/BAH

I don't think anyone ever complains about officer pay. The enlisted pay is significantly lower.

Being EX Navy myself I can tell you a lot of people complain about the pay, Officers don't do it out loud.
Enlisted pay is not significantly lower, maybe in certain fields.
I was a Navy Nuke for 6 years, Good luck at NNPS.

I've never really understood those who complain about pay. I guess some folks just count their money differently.

My last year in I was collecting $1600 every two weeks. If I were to walk up to every single Marine or Sailor on Camp Lejeune and say "I collect $1600 every payday", probably well over 90% would reply "But that's including your BAH and your ComRats (BAS)". I never understood those folks who feel you shouldn't consider BAH and BAS when considering pay.

Sometimes it does seem the pay system is a bit Marxist. A good example would be the difference between Officer and Enlisted BAS. Enlisted BAS is significantly higher and that's pure silliness. What it costs to eat is what it costs to eat.

If I were king of the world, the pay rules would look a lot different. There wouldn't be any of this business of a Marine on Camp Lejeune deploying to the Med for 6 months, eating on the Mess Deck at no charge yet still collecting ComRats just because we had wives outside the gates of Pendleton the first Gulf War crying about they didn't have any money now that their husbands were gone. That Comrats money was never theirs anyway. ComRats is for the member, not the spouse. You just can't get some folks to understand that.

DLA (dislocation) and FSA (family separation) would probably look a lot different, too.

Some folks just want too much. Some folks want to collect a Clothing Replacement Allowance once a year and when it comes time for uniform inspections they want to cry about they don't have any money for uniforms. At the end of that day they will drive out the gate of Camp Lejeune in their new car with personalized plates going who knows where.

The folks in Iraq aren't getting paid enough. A fair number of folks on Lejeune are probably getting paid too much. I think it all depends on who you are and where you are.

Come May, do you start getting paid as an O-1E or do you have to do the four years enlisted before going to OCS in order to qualify? That sure would make a huge difference. (edit to remove this last paragraph; confused once again)

I won't get O-1E but I am already getting O-1 with 3 years service, which is the same amount. That extra $600 a month is great. :D

I've got an Marine Corps ROTC scholarship for college next year and they pay me a monthly stipend as a midshipmen! I recently read a really good book called Big Red. Talked about a deployment on a Ohio-class SSBN. I read about the interview that Rickover put all of the ensigns through. Damn that was impressive. The man was a god for the whole time he was in the Navy. Seriously though, you shoulda gone USMC. There smaller but they could kick the Army and Airforce's ass any day of the week. The Navy's ok in my book though. Army, ugh. :p

the only enlisted people who seemed to have trouble were the really low ranking ones that came in with kids and had stupid wives that literally could not write a check and didn't work. If you go to a military base, 90% of enlisted people drive nice cars and have no trouble.

Wait until you're stationed on Okinawa and then talk to me about how much the Marine Corps kicks Air Force ass. Esprit de corps only goes so far when your living conditions suck. I actually feel sorry for the single Marines here -- they get the shaft, especially the combat troops stationed up north at Camps Hansen and Schwab.

Seriously, is there a good Marine base (not mocking, just not familiar with Marine bases)? The only one that comes to my mind is on Oahu, and that's on the other side of the island from Honolulu and Waikiki (though not terribly far, admittedly).

I had a great time there and I got my butt kicked into shape. The discipline you learn there is also amazing. If anyone has considered joining the military or is curious let me know...there is a lot I can't talk about but I can try. Anyways, I'm rather excited and I just wanted to share.

/salute my friend fair weather and following seas...
but remeber 1 thing... its great and all to be an officer but dont you ever forget the enlisteds are your lifeblood no matter what specialty you enter...
give them respect and they will respect you... and dont ever forget that your enlisteds may have 4x the experiece you do in a situation... learn to absorb what your guys tell you....
